Addressing Spyware Issues with Ad-Aware 2009

Previously, we highlighted the prevalence of spyware and demonstrated its removal using Spybot. This article details how to remediate infections utilizing Ad-Aware 2009, offering another effective solution.

Scanning Your System for Malware

A key benefit of Ad-Aware 2009 is its automatic update check upon installation. This ensures you possess the latest definitions for threat detection.

Following the update process, a system restart is requested. After the reboot, the main scanning interface appears, allowing you to initiate a malware scan by selecting the "Radar Symbol".

Upon clicking the "Radar Symbol", the scan configuration window is presented. For optimal malware removal, a "Full Scan" is strongly advised. The screenshot illustrates the scan scope and the types of malicious software targeted. Begin the scan by pressing the "Scan Now" button.

Reviewing Scan Results

The duration of the scan is dependent on your system's size and file count. Once completed, the scan results are categorized for easy review, as shown below.

Each category features drop-down menus, enabling you to select the desired action for handling detected threats – a particularly useful feature.

The available options within the drop-down menus are displayed here. While the default is "Recommended", it may not always be the most appropriate course of action.

It's important to note that the "Recommended" action varies per category, so choose the option that best aligns with your assessment.

In our test case, we selected "Remove all" across all categories, confident in the identification of problematic items. If uncertainty exists, a quick online search using a search engine can provide valuable guidance.

The option to "Set System Restore Point" is also available and is highly recommended. Once your settings are finalized, click the "Perform Actions Now" button.

Be aware that selecting "Set System Restore Point" will cause a temporary pause in activity as the restore point is created. This is normal and expected.

Completing Malware Removal

During the removal process, Ad-Aware may flag suspicious files for your attention. In our example, we chose to "Submit" the file to Lavasoft for analysis.

Submitting potentially malicious files is encouraged, as it contributes to improved future scan accuracy.

After addressing any flagged files, a results window will appear, detailing the actions taken. You may be prompted to "Reboot Your Computer" at this stage.
