Moviefone is Back! - Movie Listings and More

Moviefone's Attempt at a Revival

For a significant portion of movie enthusiasts during the 1990s, the 777-FILM number associated with Moviefone served as the primary resource for obtaining movie showtime information. Currently, with a change in ownership, Moviefone is undertaking efforts to re-establish its presence in the market.

New App and TV Series

As part of its 35th-anniversary celebrations, Moviefone revealed on Friday the relaunch of its mobile application and the introduction of a new, nationally syndicated television series.

The new app, scheduled for a private beta launch this month, is intended to complement the existing web platform. It will enable mobile users to search for showtimes and purchase tickets for current releases.

Furthermore, the app will facilitate the discovery of popular movies and television programs. Users will also gain access to Moviefone’s exclusive video content, including celebrity interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and film reviews. A public launch is anticipated this summer.

Expanding Media Presence with Moviefone TV

Moviefone TV represents the company’s strategy to broaden its original media offerings. This involves distributing its entertainment content to various television stations throughout the United States.

A Look Back at Moviefone's History

Originally established in 1989, Moviefone quickly became a leading online platform for movie ticket sales and information. This occurred before the emergence of competitors like MovieTickets.com and Fandango.com.

The company experienced several acquisitions, including its purchase by AOL in 1999. Later, it was acquired by Helios and Matheson Analytics, the original parent company of MoviePass, which ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2020.

Following this, Cleveland O’Neal, a television producer and the creator of “Made in Hollywood,” assumed leadership to spearhead a revitalization effort.

Targeting a New Generation

The development of the new app demonstrates Moviefone’s commitment to remaining relevant by appealing to a younger, digitally-focused audience. With 80% of Moviefone’s current audience falling within the 18-44 age range, the company recognizes the necessity of a dedicated app to effectively compete in the current market.

Broadcast and Streaming Plans for Moviefone TV

The weekly TV series is slated to premiere this fall, though specific broadcast stations have not yet been confirmed. Availability will vary depending on the local market.

There is a possibility of airing on networks that currently broadcast “Made in Hollywood,” which has an existing agreement with CBS.

Acknowledging the declining viewership of traditional television, Moviefone TV also intends to launch on undisclosed streaming platforms and free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) services.

Leveraging Social Media Influencers

To attract a younger demographic, the show plans to feature appearances by prominent social media influencers.

The Future of Moviefone

Whether this initiative will successfully mark a true comeback for Moviefone remains to be seen. However, the renewed interest in theatrical moviegoing following the pandemic suggests a potential for nostalgia and renewed engagement with the relaunched app.
