Reliance Plans Massive Data Center in Jamnagar, India

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance is formulating plans for a data center in Jamnagar, India, which has the potential to be the largest globally. This facility is projected to have a power capacity of 3 gigawatts.

The planned scale of this project significantly exceeds the current leading data center. Microsoft’s 600-megawatt site located in Virginia would be dwarfed by the new Reliance facility, as reported by Bloomberg on Friday.

Projected Costs and Funding

Estimates suggest the construction of this data center could require an investment ranging from $20 billion to $30 billion.

Back in 2020, Reliance secured over $25 billion in funding from a consortium of investors. This group included prominent firms such as Meta, Google, Silver Lake, General Atlantic, KKR, Mubadala, and PIF. The capital was intended to bolster the expansion of Reliance’s retail and telecommunications businesses.

Currently, Reliance holds the position of India’s most valuable company.

Sustainable Power Source

Ambani intends to primarily utilize renewable energy to power the data center. An adjacent green energy complex will be responsible for generating this power through solar, wind, and hydrogen sources.

Partnership with Nvidia

Nvidia is supplying Ambani with the necessary chips for the data center. This collaboration was formalized in October with an announcement detailing a partnership to develop infrastructure supporting AI applications within India.

Global Investment in AI Infrastructure

The Jamnagar project coincides with substantial commitments to AI infrastructure. This week, OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle collectively pledged up to $500 billion towards such infrastructure in the United States through their Stargate Project.
