Relativity Space Delays Terran 1 Rocket Launch to 2022

Relativity Space Adjusts Terran 1 Rocket Launch Timeline

Relativity Space, the firm pioneering 3D rocket printing, has revised the anticipated launch date for its Terran 1 rocket. Originally slated for a winter 2021 launch, the demonstration flight is now targeted for early 2022.

This schedule update was communicated via the company’s Twitter feed, alongside confirmation that Cape Canaveral, Florida, will serve as the launch location.

Successful Stage Testing Completed

Relativity Space also reported the successful completion of cryogenic pressure and hydromechanical buckling tests for Stage 2 of the Terran 1. Structural testing of Stage 1 is scheduled to commence shortly.

The postponement follows a previous announcement made on Twitter just two months prior, which initially projected a winter 2021 launch window.

Upcoming Launches and NASA Contract

The initial orbital demonstration flight will not include a commercial payload. However, a second launch is already planned for June 2022.

This subsequent mission will deploy CubeSats into low-Earth orbit under the terms of NASA’s Venture Class Launch Services Demonstration 2 (VCLS Demo 2) contract.

Factors Contributing to the Delay

According to a company representative speaking with TechCrunch, the launch delay isn't attributable to a single cause.

“Over the last year, Relativity has refined the Terran 1’s design, created a new engine, and improved its materials,” the spokesperson explained. “COVID-related disruptions also impacted some processes.”

The updated launch window allows for improved coordination with key partners.

A Milestone in 3D-Printed Space Technology

This launch represents a significant milestone as the first-ever launch of a completely 3D-printed rocket. The innovative technology has attracted substantial investor interest.

Relativity Space’s valuation reached $4.2 billion following a $650 million funding round secured earlier this summer.

Future Development: Terran R

Beyond the Terran 1, Relativity Space is actively developing Terran R, a larger, fully reusable heavy-lift rocket.

The company anticipates launching the Terran R as early as 2024.
