Reface: Face Swap for Photos & GIFs - Try It Now!

Reface App Expands AI-Powered Animation Capabilities
The popular face-swapping application, Reface, is broadening its scope beyond simple selfies. It now allows users to upload a wider range of their own content to be brought to life through artificial intelligence.
New 'Swap Animation' Feature
While direct video uploads from users are not yet available on the iOS and Android platforms, the newly introduced 'Swap Animation' feature enables the uploading of images. These images can include monuments, memes, artwork, or even photographs of individuals.
Users can then select from a variety of in-app song excerpts and poetic verses. The AI will then animate the uploaded image, making it appear as though it is speaking or singing along with the chosen audio.
From Curated Content to User-Generated Material
Previously, Reface adopted a highly controlled approach to content. Users were limited to face-swapping into pre-selected clips from movies and music videos, alongside memes and other visual media.
This new functionality, powered by Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) algorithms, significantly increases the app’s creative potential. It empowers users to provide their own source material for animation and face-swapping.
Competition and Future Development
Several competing applications already offer similar features, such as Avatarify, Wombo, and Deep Nostalgia. Reface’s update represents a move to align with these capabilities.
However, Reface is going a step further by allowing users to integrate their own faces into the chosen source content. This means users can visualize themselves as a singing Venus de Milo or see their likeness reciting poetry against the backdrop of a pop-art masterpiece, like Andy Warhol’s Marilyn.
Moderation and Safety
The startup, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, is proceeding cautiously with this expansion. All uploads from the new feature will undergo manual moderation to ensure appropriate content.
Pressure from competitors offering more open functionality is influencing Reface’s development. Apps like Avatarify already permit users to animate their own photos. A Reface spokesperson indicated that user-generated video uploads are planned “in the near future.”
Exclusive Access for Pro Users
Currently, pro subscribers are receiving early access to an additional feature. They can upload their own GIFs for face-swapping within the latest release.
CEO Statement
Dima Shvets, CEO of Reface, stated, “We’re really excited to see what Reface users do with swap-reenactment, which is a major technical milestone in terms of the machine learning technology inside of the app.”
He further added, “Reface content creators have been clamoring for more tools for personalized content and self-expression – and this feature delivers, dramatically extending the opportunities for realizing their vision and creativity.”
Rapid Growth and Popularity
The app has quickly gained traction since its launch, generating significant viral attention through social media sharing as users showcased their amusing face swaps.
As of March 2021, Reface reported reaching 100 million installs, just 14 months after its initial release.
