Reddit's AI Strategy: Targeting Google Users

Reddit Categorizes Users and Expands AI-Powered Answers

According to Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, the platform’s user base can be broadly divided into two distinct groups: those who scroll and those who seek.

Scrollers actively participate within Reddit’s communities, engaging in discussions centered around their interests – ranging from subreddits like r/sourdough to r/popculturechat. Conversely, Seekers typically arrive via external search engines, often appending “Reddit” to their queries to access authentic advice and perspectives.

Reddit Answers: Targeting the Seeker

Reddit’s new Answers feature, an AI-driven chatbot, is specifically designed to cater to the needs of these Seekers. It delivers direct answers and concise summaries sourced from existing Reddit posts.

Initial data indicates that this product is experiencing rapid adoption. Huffman revealed on the company’s Q1 earnings call that they hadn’t previously focused on building a dedicated product for this user type.

“These users aren’t necessarily looking for community interaction at that moment; they require a direct response to their question,” Huffman explained. “We are now better positioned to address this specific need.”

Growth and Expansion of Reddit Answers

Since its beta launch in December, Reddit Answers has reached 1 million weekly active users. The service was subsequently extended beyond the United States to include Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and India last month.

Currently accessible as a separate section within the app’s navigation bar, Reddit intends to integrate Answers more seamlessly into the core platform throughout 2025.

One planned integration involves enhancing the primary search functionality, allowing users to input complete questions rather than isolated keywords.

The company is also investigating methods to introduce Answers to new users, showcasing the breadth of content available on Reddit.

“A new user’s initial experience could involve utilizing Answers to explore Reddit’s offerings and discover the platform’s relevance to their interests,” Huffman stated.

Mitigating Search Engine Dependency

Furthermore, Reddit is exploring ways to present summarized answers directly through external search results, potentially reducing reliance on search engine algorithms.

This strategy is partly a response to recent fluctuations in user growth caused by a Google Search algorithm update in Q4 2024, which initially concerned investors despite positive earnings reports.

“While we value the visibility that search engines provide, we also recognize the potential for instability,” Huffman noted. “We anticipate ongoing adjustments from Google, particularly given the current state of the search landscape.”

Strong Financial Performance

Reddit’s stock price increased significantly in after-hours trading following the announcement of better-than-expected earnings and substantial user growth.

The company reported revenue of $392.4 million, a 61% year-over-year increase. Adjusted EBITDA reached $115.3 million, and daily active unique users climbed to 108.1 million, representing a 31% year-over-year rise.

For the second quarter, Reddit projects revenue between $410 million and $430 million, with adjusted EBITDA ranging from $110 million to $130 million.
