Kindle App Updates for iOS Devices

Following my initial assessment of the Amazon Kindle application on the iPad and other iOS platforms, several significant enhancements have been implemented through subsequent updates.

These improvements extend beyond fundamental features like annotation and the e-book library, alongside the continued benefit of Whispersync technology.

Expanded Content Support

The Kindle app now supports the importation of both magazines and newspapers, in addition to personal documents.

Crucially, this expanded content library is capable of being synchronized across multiple iOS devices, offering a seamless reading experience.

Enhanced Functionality

Although the Kindle app doesn't yet fully address all areas for improvement, the recent updates demonstrably enhance its overall functionality for e-book reading.

These changes contribute to a more versatile and user-friendly platform for digital literature consumption.

The app continues to evolve, providing a more comprehensive solution for users of Kindle content on their iOS devices.

Personal Documents

A significant enhancement in the Kindle 2.9 application is the ability for Amazon subscribers to transmit personal documents directly to their Kindle-compatible devices. This is achieved through a dedicated Send-to-Kindle email address ([assigned name]@kindle.com).

Sending Documents

Users can now attach various file types, including PDFs, Word documents, JPEGs, and PNGs, from either their computers or mobile devices to the email address linked to their Amazon account.

Amazon clarifies that including a subject line isn't mandatory, unless a conversion to the Kindle format is desired. To initiate this conversion to the .azw format, the subject line should simply read 'convert' when sending the document to the designated Send-to-Kindle address.

Kindle Format Conversion

For full utilization of Kindle’s annotation capabilities, documents must be transformed into the Kindle format. However, testing reveals that certain elements within documents, such as a PDF’s table of contents, may experience formatting inconsistencies during the .azw conversion process.

Authorized Senders

The functionality extends to allowing other individuals to send documents to your device, but only after their email address has been explicitly approved by you.

This management of authorized senders is done through the 'Manage Your Kindle' section of your Amazon account, specifically within the 'Personal Document Settings'. This approval process is crucial for preventing unwanted email and potential spam.

Limitations

There are certain limitations associated with this feature. Each submitted email cannot exceed 25 attached personal documents.

Furthermore, the number of unique Send-to-Kindle addresses targeted by these emails must remain below 15.

Benefits

This personal documents feature offers a practical solution for reducing paper consumption. It also provides a convenient method for digitally archiving your important files within the cloud.

Magazines and Newspapers on Kindle

The latest Kindle application update for iPad users introduces access to a wide selection of periodicals. Amazon customers can now choose from more than 400 different magazines and newspapers available through the Kindle Store.

Purchasing options include both individual issues and subscription services. Titles available encompass a diverse range of interests, featuring publications such as Martha Stewart Living, Cosmopolitan, The New York Times, and Popular Science.

Considerations Before Purchasing

Feedback from some Kindle users suggests that the quality of digital editions may sometimes differ from their printed counterparts. It is advisable to review customer feedback prior to completing a purchase.

This allows potential buyers to assess the production value and ensure satisfaction with the digital format.

The Kindle application has received a user interface overhaul. Downloaded content is now organized into distinct categories: All Items, Books, Newsstand, and Documents.

This categorization allows for easier navigation and management of your digital library.

Content Archiving

Kindle books and personal documents can now be archived directly to your account. This feature is designed to free up storage space on your mobile devices.

Archiving doesn’t delete the content; it simply removes it from your device while retaining it within your Kindle library.

A dedicated section differentiating purchased Kindle books from sample copies would further improve the user experience.

Currently, both types of e-books are often displayed together, which can be confusing for users.

Kindle App Social Sharing Features

A recent Kindle app update introduced the ability to share excerpts directly to platforms like Twitter and Facebook. This is accomplished through a link that directs users to the highlighted section on your personal Kindle profile.

Kindle Community Interaction

Furthermore, the Kindle platform allows you to connect and engage with other readers. Following and networking with fellow Kindle users is now possible.

Currently, the process of accessing and reviewing notes, highlights, and bookmarks isn't optimally efficient, particularly for academic users like students and researchers, on the Kindle e-reader itself.

We are interested in your feedback regarding these updates. Have you increased your ebook reading on Kindle recently?

What additional functionalities would you find beneficial?
