Moon+ Reader - Read Books on Android

The Convenience of Smartphone Reading

Despite my fondness for my Kindle device, my smartphone remains a constant companion. A key limitation of the Kindle is its lack of a backlit screen – a deliberate design choice, admittedly. However, a traditional reading lamp can sometimes emit excessive illumination, particularly when another person is attempting to sleep nearby while you wish to read. Consequently, when I am mobile or reading late at night, I often find myself opting for my smartphone over my Kindle for accessing reading material.

When this occurs, Moon+ Reader is typically my application of choice, a remarkably well-designed e-book reader. I have evaluated numerous reader applications, and Moon+ has consistently impressed me with its features and usability.

The initial screen displays the application's interface, and it also reveals one of the few drawbacks of the Moon+ experience – the presence of banner advertisements. Nevertheless, the app’s developer needs to generate revenue, and these advertisements are confined to this introductory screen. Let's examine how an ePub book appears within the application:

Several aspects are noteworthy here. The reading experience is presented in full-screen mode. A streamlined information bar is located at the bottom, consuming minimal screen space while clearly displaying the battery percentage, current time, chapter title (when applicable), and your reading progress. The overall aesthetic is exceptionally clean and refined. A different theme might be preferable for daytime reading.

Tapping the screen's center reveals the top and bottom control bars. The majority of the icons on the bottom bar are intuitively understandable, though some warrant further discussion.

Let's begin by exploring the auto-scrolling functionality (represented by the Play button). Moon+ provides a variety of auto-scrolling options:

My preferred setting is "Rolling blind by pixel." In practice, this feature operates as follows:

A scrolling line is visible near the top of the screen. While it may appear as a visual anomaly in the screenshot, it is actually a line that smoothly descends, progressively revealing the subsequent page, pixel by pixel. The volume buttons can be utilized to adjust the scrolling speed. This method is appealing because the text remains stationary while you are reading. With the appropriate speed setting, you can reach the page's end and then simply move your gaze upward, where the next page will already be displayed. It delivers a remarkably fluid reading experience.

Moon+ offers extensive customization options. These options are accessible via the right-most button on the bottom bar.

First, consider the Visual options:

Here, you can adjust the font size, colors, and the font itself to your preferences.

Next, explore the Control options:

This section is incredibly comprehensive, allowing you to define the behavior of screen taps, volume button presses, Back, Search, and Camera key actions, and various swipe gestures (left to right, right to left, top to bottom, and bottom to top). Essentially, you can fine-tune and personalize almost any aspect of the application’s functionality.

Finally, the Miscellaneous settings:

This section includes features such as preventing the phone from entering sleep mode, and the ability to adjust font size and brightness by swiping along the screen's edges. Similar to the Control Options dialog, this one extends downwards for multiple screens, revealing settings like "remind me to rest my eyes", and other useful features. Moon+ Reader also provides a selection of themes, beyond the two previously shown:

Concluding Remarks

Moon+ Reader stands out as an exceptional ebook reader application designed for the Android platform. It boasts a comprehensive array of customization features and delivers substantial functionality.

For individuals seeking a superior reading experience on their Android devices, this app is undoubtedly a top contender worth exploring.
