Raspberry AI Raises $24M to Revolutionize Fashion Design

The Accelerating Pace of Fashion and the Rise of AI-Powered Design

The fashion industry is experiencing an increasingly rapid cycle of trends. Many retailers launch new styles seasonally, while fast-fashion brands such as Shein, H&M, and Zara consistently refresh their collections.

To address the growing demand for novelty, brands and manufacturers are increasingly adopting technological solutions to streamline and expedite their design workflows.

Raspberry AI: A New Solution for Rapid Design Iteration

Raspberry AI, a startup established two years ago, presents a technological approach to accelerate product development. Its text-to-image platform empowers designers to visualize and refine concepts with unprecedented speed.

Cheryl Liu, Raspberry’s founder, identified a significant opportunity to apply generative AI to fashion design. Prior to founding Raspberry AI, Liu worked as a private equity analyst at KKR, specializing in the retail sector, and later held positions at Amazon and DoorDash.

The emergence of image models like OpenAI’s DALL-E and Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion in late 2022 sparked this realization.

“Previously, generating numerous designs was a laborious process,” Liu explained in an interview with TechCrunch. “Designers often relied on ordering physical samples, a process that could take weeks to complete.”

Traditional alternatives included older computer-aided design (CAD) tools like Browzwear and Adobe Photoshop.

From Sketch to Realistic Image

Raspberry AI enables designers to transform their sketches into photorealistic images, mirroring how they would appear on a brand’s online store.

This capability assists brands in evaluating the viability of manufacturing a product, according to Liu.

“Designers can visualize a single foundational piece rendered in a variety of materials and prints,” she stated. “The ability to view 50 different iterations of a design is now feasible, eliminating the need to order 50 physical samples.”

Rapid Adoption and Growth

The product has quickly gained traction within the industry. Currently, Raspberry AI serves 70 customers, including prominent names like athletic apparel brand Under Armour, Gruppo Teddy – an Italian manufacturer operating 8,840 stores across 39 countries – and luxury designer MCM Worldwide.

This substantial growth has facilitated a $24 million Series A funding round, led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from existing investors Greycroft, Correlation Ventures, and MVP Ventures.

This funding arrives approximately ten months after the startup secured a $4.5 million seed round.

Bryan Kim, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, highlighted the firm’s interest in investing in an AI company capable of accelerating the fashion manufacturing process.

“We evaluated several companies and were particularly impressed by Cheryl’s vision and her approach to company building,” Kim noted.

The presence of “significant and influential clients” at Raspberry AI also contributed to the investment decision.

Differentiating Factors: Industry-Specific Understanding

While acknowledging competition from other AI image generators like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Adobe Firefly, Liu emphasized that Raspberry AI’s strength lies in its ability to comprehend and accurately interpret specialized industry terminology.

As an example, she cited the term “fuzzy sweater,” explaining that “a significant amount of nuanced terminology underlies that description, knowledge that a general AI like Midjourney lacks.”

Sketch-to-Image Capabilities

Raspberry AI also offers a unique feature: the ability to generate images directly from sketches.

Future Expansion

The newly acquired funding will be allocated to expanding the team with engineering, sales, and marketing professionals.

Furthermore, Raspberry AI plans to extend its platform’s capabilities to encompass product design in the home goods, furniture, and cosmetics sectors.
