Qualcomm Skips MWC: No In-Person Presence

Qualcomm Joins Growing List of Companies Opting Out of MWC Barcelona
A prominent player in the mobile industry has announced it will not be physically present at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Qualcomm, a leading chip manufacturer, is now among a growing number of companies choosing not to exhibit in person.
Virtual Participation Becoming the Norm
The company joins Google, IBM, Nokia, Sony, Oracle, Ericsson, Samsung, and Lenovo in deciding to participate virtually. This decision was communicated to TechCrunch via an official company statement.
According to the spokesperson, Qualcomm prioritizes the well-being of its employees and customers. Therefore, a virtual presence is deemed the most suitable approach for this year’s event.
Looking Ahead to Virtual Engagement
The company anticipates active engagement with the industry through Cristiano Amon’s virtual keynote address scheduled for June 28th. Furthermore, they plan to showcase their latest innovations and 5G demonstrations online.
Echoes of Last Year’s Event
This situation mirrors the circumstances surrounding last year’s MWC, where companies gradually withdrew their participation. Ultimately, the GSMA, the event’s organizing body, made the decision to cancel the physical show.
A Different Landscape in 2021
However, the current context differs from 2021. With nearly a year and a half having passed, there is reduced uncertainty. Additionally, vaccination programs are underway in many parts of the globe.
Continued Caution Regarding Travel
Despite these improvements, concerns remain regarding international travel and attending large gatherings. The potential risks and discomfort for staff are significant factors in these decisions.
The Future of In-Person Trade Shows
Considering these factors, Qualcomm’s choice is understandable. While a complete cancellation seems unlikely at this point, the event’s success increasingly relies on its virtual components. The past two years may have permanently altered the landscape of in-person trade shows.
It appears the hybrid model is becoming increasingly important for events like MWC.
