providing healthcare to lower-income communities values cityblock health at $1 billion

Cityblock Health, a healthcare provider focused on serving communities with limited financial resources, has achieved a valuation exceeding $1 billion following a $160 million investment from venture capital firms.

This funding round was spearheaded by General Catalyst, a new investor, and included contributions from Wellington Management, a crossover investor, as well as continued support from existing investors such as Kinnevik AB, Maverick Ventures, Thrive Capital, Redpoint Ventures, and others, as detailed in a company announcement.

Cityblock collaborates with local healthcare professionals to deliver primary care, mental health services, and other essential support to individuals, addressing factors that influence health outcomes. These services are offered both directly to patients and, increasingly, through remote consultations.

The organization originated as a division of Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs in 2017 and initially established a partnership with EmblemHealth. By utilizing licensed clinical social workers, community-based health organizations, and a network of specialized clinicians and physicians, Cityblock aims to reduce overall healthcare expenses while providing fundamental primary care and related health assistance.

Currently, approximately 70,000 individuals receive care through Cityblock’s services across four major cities in the United States, according to the company.

The total amount of funding Cityblock has secured to date is $300 million.

According to a company statement, the newly acquired funds will be allocated to facilitate Cityblock’s growth nationwide, specifically in providing care to individuals covered by Medicaid and those eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare. These funds will also be used to recruit and integrate new personnel across various departments – including product development, engineering, data science, clinical care, and business operations – to introduce new service offerings, and to further develop its proprietary technology platform, known as Commons.
