Protecting Your Computer from Young Children with KidSafe

Do you need a solution to safeguard your computer, personal settings, and important files from inquisitive young children who enjoy experimenting with the keyboard? Consider exploring the features offered by KidSafe.

Please note that the software is currently distributed in two formats: a standard zip file installation and a portable applications version. This article focuses on the portable version for ease of use.

Setup Process

A significant advantage of the latest KidSafe release is its compatibility with the portableapps.com format, allowing you to easily transport it with you.

The “Program Folder” contains the necessary files; simply place the folder in a suitable location, create a shortcut, and the program is ready for operation.

As this software is relatively new to the portable apps ecosystem, you may encounter a warning message upon initial startup. However, this is not a cause for concern, and the program functioned flawlessly during our testing.

KidSafe in Operation

Upon launching KidSafe, your screen will be temporarily obscured during the setup phase. Observe the two menus located in the upper left corner – “Tools” and “Help”.

Accessing the options within the “Tool Menu” requires the password you will establish for KidSafe, preventing unauthorized access and modification of settings by children.

KidSafe features three setup windows. The first allows you to customize settings related to keys, keyboard shortcuts, and access to the Task Manager. We recommend disabling the “Windows Key” on our test system, as it isn’t a standard keyboard combination.

Remember to highlight or select existing entries from the right side of the window to modify them.

For detailed information about a specific setting, simply hover your mouse cursor over the corresponding “yes/no” option; a tooltip will display a description of its function.

The second window enables you to select the KidSafe Mode that best aligns with your requirements. You can also choose a custom wallpaper image in .bmp, .jpg, or .png format, or allow KidSafe to use a default background by leaving the field blank.

The following options are available in the KidSafe Mode dropdown menu:

The final window is dedicated to setting up your password for KidSafe. Click “Finish” once you have completed this step.

Once you click “Finish” in the options/settings, KidSafe will become active. We subjected the system to rigorous testing, and KidSafe successfully prevented any unintended changes. Access was only possible using the configured password.

Please note that the displayed wallpaper is not the default KidSafe wallpaper.

To deactivate KidSafe, enter your password and click “OK”. Pressing the “Enter” key will not unlock the program.
