PowerZ Raises $8.3M to Revolutionize Education Through Gaming

PowerZ Secures $8.3 Million to Revolutionize Educational Gaming
The French company PowerZ has successfully completed a funding round, raising $8.3 million (€7 million based on current exchange rates). This investment includes $1.2 million (€1 million) in debt financing, with the remainder coming from a traditional equity offering.
Edtech and Gaming Convergence
PowerZ operates at the intersection of education technology and video game development. Its core ambition is to create a gaming experience comparable in engagement to popular titles like Minecraft and Fortnite, but with a dedicated focus on educational content.
Initial Game Launch and User Engagement
In February, PowerZ released the initial iteration of its game for computer platforms. While currently limited in content, this launch was strategically designed to facilitate rapid iteration and user feedback. The game is targeted towards children aged six and above, immersing them in a fantastical realm populated by charming dragons and magical abilities.
A "Harry Potter" Inspired Vision
Co-founder and CEO Emmanuel Freund articulated the company’s vision, stating, “The aim is to essentially construct a world akin to Harry Potter.” He further explained the desire to create a captivating environment, much like Hogwarts, that encourages frequent return visits and a continuously unfolding narrative.
Positive Early Metrics
Approximately 15,000 children have experienced the game’s first chapter, dedicating an average of four hours to gameplay. Freund expressed strong satisfaction with these initial metrics, asserting that they “completely validate” the company’s underlying concept.
Investment Details
This funding round saw participation from Bpifrance Digital Venture, RAISE Ventures, and Bayard. Existing investors, including Educapital, Hachette Livres, Pierre Kosciusko-Morizet, and Michaël Benabou, also contributed to this latest investment.
Future Content Expansion and Partnerships
The newly acquired funds will be allocated towards content creation, platform expansion, and language localization. PowerZ intends to collaborate with external game studios to develop new islands and design gameplay experiences centered around learning. Zero Games, Opal Games, and ArkRep are among the first third-party studios partnering with PowerZ.
Diverse Educational Subjects
Future game chapters will incorporate learning opportunities in areas such as mental calculation, geometry, vocabulary, foreign languages, sign language, astronomy, photography, architecture, sculpture, cooking, wildlife, and yoga.
Publisher Model
Freund clarified the company’s strategic direction, stating, “We aim to establish ourselves as a publisher.” He emphasized that PowerZ intends to maintain internal control over the core storyline while outsourcing the development of supplementary content.
Platform Strategy Shift
PowerZ is launching its game on the iPad this week. The company acknowledged that an initial focus on computers proved to be suboptimal, as adults either already utilize computers for their own purposes or are hesitant to allow children unsupervised computer access. Consequently, the iPad is prioritized, with an iPhone release planned to follow.
Console and Language Expansion
Looking ahead to 2022, PowerZ anticipates releasing its game on the Nintendo Switch and potentially other gaming consoles. The startup is also actively considering the launch of an English-language version of the game.
Monetization Strategy
Currently, the game is available free of charge. Freund indicated that the company plans to implement a monetization strategy mirroring common practices in the gaming industry, specifically through in-app purchases of cosmetic items.
Addressing Concerns About Screen Time
Freund addressed the broader debate surrounding screen time and its impact on children. He argued that dismissing screens entirely could lead to less engaging educational alternatives, such as traditional workbooks. He expressed a sense of urgency to develop a scalable, screen-based educational platform.
Long-Term Vision
PowerZ aspires to reach a substantial audience of hundreds of thousands of children. The company envisions its game evolving into a versatile platform, similar to Fortnite or Minecraft, capable of supporting a wide range of evolving content and functionalities.
