Port Raises $100M to Compete with Spotify's Backstage

Spotify's Backstage and the Rise of Internal Developer Portals
While widely recognized for music streaming, Spotify also maintains a significant and increasingly popular developer-tool initiative known as Backstage.
Backstage is an open source project designed to assist organizations in constructing their own internal developer portals. These portals provide a centralized catalog of developer tools, coupled with visual representations of tool usage and associated performance metrics.
Port: A Proprietary Competitor to Backstage
However, implementing Backstage requires a build-it-yourself approach, similar to many open source solutions. Israeli startup Port has emerged as a strong competitor, attracting prominent clients such as GitHub, British Telecom, and LG with its proprietary dev tool portal.
Recently, Port expanded its capabilities to encompass the management of AI agents, further differentiating its offering.
Port Secures $100 Million in Series C Funding
On Thursday, Port, established in 2022, announced the successful completion of a $100 million Series C funding round. General Atlantic spearheaded the investment, with participation from Accel, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Team8.
This funding round values Port at $800 million, bringing the company’s total funding to $158 million. It follows a $35 million Series B round led by Accel and Bessemer, which was announced in May.
The Growing Role of AI Agents in Software Development
The integration of Large Language Model (LLM)-based technologies has profoundly impacted numerous industries, with coding experiencing the most substantial influence.
Consequently, developers are at the forefront of creating and adopting AI agents capable of automating complex, repetitive processes – extending far beyond simple code generation.
Addressing the Challenges of Agent Management
According to Zohar Einy, co-founder and CEO of Port, the current landscape for dev tool agents within companies is largely unstructured. Challenges include agent discovery, sharing, adherence to company standards, and ensuring consistent performance.
Developers aspire to leverage AI for tasks beyond coding, such as incident resolution, security issue remediation, and release management, as stated by Einy in an interview with TechCrunch.
However, without proper management, connecting agents to diverse tools and data sources, coupled with a lack of collaboration and standardized guardrails, can lead to operational chaos.
Port's Solution: Orchestration and Control
Port offers a comprehensive solution that extends beyond a simple catalog of dev and agent tools. It provides a layer of orchestration, incorporating features to monitor agent performance and facilitate human oversight through approval processes.
The “context lake” feature defines the data sources, context memory, and security parameters for agents. Einy explains that this feature manages the information agents require to perform their tasks safely and accurately.
Users can utilize Port to catalog existing agents created with other tools, as well as build new agents directly within the platform. Port also provides pre-built agents for tasks like resolving help desk tickets and managing provisioning.
Einy positions his product as addressing the 90% of a software programmer’s work that doesn’t involve writing code. It provides engineers with a user interface to control, iterate with, and approve the actions of agents, particularly those tasks outside of core coding functions.
Competition and Future Outlook
Backed by substantial funding, a growing customer base, and prominent venture capital firms, Port is poised to become a key player in the agentic management space.
However, the competitive landscape is intensely crowded. The agentic management and orchestration category is attracting numerous companies, ranging from established technology giants to emerging startups, each approaching the challenges from unique perspectives.
Notable competitors include LangChain, UiPath, Cortex, and others.
