Reliving Classic Gaming: Playing Oregon Trail on a Modern PC

A fondness for classic computer games is something I readily admit to. Oregon Trail holds a special place in my memories as the very first computer game I experienced, played on the Apple IIe system.

Fortunately, those cherished memories can be revisited today. Utilizing the Enhanced Apple IIe Emulator alongside readily available virtual floppy discs, it’s possible to experience the game on contemporary PCs.

Currently, I am enjoying this on a Windows XP machine. Compatibility with Vista remains unconfirmed.

Setting Up the Emulator

The initial step involves downloading AppleWin 1.14.0. This software is distributed as a zip file, so extraction to a preferred location is necessary.

After extraction, navigate to the folder and launch the emulator by double-clicking the AppleWin.exe icon. Initiate the virtual machine by selecting the Apple button located in the upper right corner of the emulator window.

Next, the game itself is required. Virtual floppy disks can be found, along with a vast collection of other classic ROMs, at jeff.greenfeld.net.

Once downloaded and extracted, click on the “Master Disk Drive” icon on the left-hand side of the emulator interface. Drag the Oregon Trail floppy disk image into this area and double-click it to begin loading.

Launching the Game

To complete the setup, reboot the virtual machine by clicking the Apple button once more. The trail now awaits!
