Pinterest Introduces Controls to Curb AI-Generated Content

In response to user concerns regarding a surge in low-quality, AI-generated content – often termed “AI slop” – Pinterest has unveiled new features designed to allow users greater control over the amount of such content they encounter.

Personalized Feed Customization

Users are now equipped with the ability to tailor their Pinterest feeds, specifically limiting the visibility of imagery created through generative AI within chosen categories. The platform also intends to enhance the prominence of its existing labels identifying GenAI content in the coming days.

Pinterest, a popular destination for browsing and saving inspirational ideas and potential purchases, has faced criticism due to the substantial increase in AI-generated posts. This issue has been widely reported, prompting questions about whether AI has negatively impacted Pinterest’s user experience and if a recovery is possible.

Potential Impact on Pinterest’s Reputation

Failure to address this problem could potentially damage Pinterest’s brand image and ultimately affect its financial performance.

Effectively managing “AI slop” presents a significant challenge as the volume of AI-generated content on the web continues to grow, and the quality of that content improves, making it harder to distinguish from human-created material. Pinterest cites research indicating that GenAI content currently comprises 57% of all online content.

Previous Efforts and New Tools

Earlier this year, Pinterest implemented “AI modified” labels on images identified as AI-generated through metadata or the platform’s detection systems. The company had previously announced plans to release user-facing tools for reducing exposure to AI content, and those tools are now available.

pinterest adds controls to let you limit the amount of ‘ai slop’ in your feedThese new controls can be accessed within the app’s “Settings” menu, under the “Refine your recommendations” section.

Category-Specific Controls and Feedback Mechanisms

Within these settings, users can specify categories – such as beauty, art, fashion, and home décor – where they wish to see less GenAI content. Pinterest plans to expand the range of available categories based on user input. Settings can be adjusted at any time.

Furthermore, users can now provide direct feedback on AI imagery encountered while browsing. By utilizing the three-dot menu on a Pin, users can select a category to refine their preferences if the content is unappealing due to its AI-generated nature.

Rollout and Future Development

The initial launch of these controls is occurring on the website and Android devices, with iOS availability planned for the coming weeks.

“Our community is central to our operations,” stated Matt Madrigal, Pinterest’s Chief Technology Officer. “These new GenAI controls empower individuals to personalize their Pinterest experience, achieving a balance between human creativity and AI innovation, and ensuring each feed accurately reflects their inspirations.”
