The Challenge of AI Implementation in Enterprises
Charanya “CK” Kannan, the chief product officer at AI customer service firm Talkdesk, observes that many organizations express a desire for workflow automation, yet struggle with actual implementation. A significant obstacle lies in the prevalence of outdated, legacy software systems lacking necessary APIs, presenting a substantial challenge for IT departments.
Kannan shared with TechCrunch that companies typically have a backlog of between 50 and 1,000 automation requests from various teams that remain unaddressed. This situation is considered unsustainable in the current technological landscape, where rapid automation should be achievable.
Introducing Pinkfish: AI Workflows Through Natural Language
This realization spurred Kannan to establish Pinkfish, a new venture designed to facilitate the creation of AI agents and other AI-powered workflows using natural language prompts. The platform boasts over 200 integrations, including connections to Salesforce and Zendesk, and prioritizes deterministic execution – ensuring consistent results from identical user inputs.
Pinkfish employs a unique sales strategy, advising enterprises to begin by automating just one or two workflows initially. This phased approach allows for gradual expansion, progressing from two to four, then ten, and ultimately aiming for widespread automation.
Early Success and Key Customers
This strategy has proven effective. Pinkfish launched in January 2024, with Kannan serving as CEO and Ben Rigby as chief product and technology officer (CPTO). The company currently focuses on sectors like retail and services, and has already secured hundreds of users and enterprise clients, including Ipsy, Elevate, and its former employer, Talkdesk.
Unlike many workflow automation startups that target less critical tasks, such as market research or lead generation, Pinkfish concentrates on mission-critical workflows.
Ipsy Case Study: Automating Price Requests
As an example, Kannan highlighted Ipsy, a makeup subscription service. Pinkfish automated Ipsy’s price request process, previously managed by a dedicated team of three individuals who handled requests manually, even outside of regular business hours. The entire process is now automated through the Pinkfish platform.
Kannan emphasized the importance of this workflow, stating that any disruption in the process could result in inaccurate pricing on the website and lost revenue.
Securing Pre-Seed Funding
Pinkfish has officially emerged from stealth mode and announced a $7.6 million pre-seed funding round. The round was led by Norwest Venture Partners, with participation from Storm Ventures and several angel investors.
Scott Beechuk, a partner at Norwest, will join Pinkfish’s board of directors. He had previously collaborated with Kannan during her tenure at Talkdesk, seeking her advice for various Norwest portfolio companies.
Beechuk expressed his confidence in Kannan and Rigby’s ability to succeed in the competitive AI agent market, citing their understanding of both the technology and the customer needs. He also noted the company’s early success in delivering demonstrable ROI to its customers.
Differentiating Pinkfish: Natural Language and Full Code Access
Kannan believes Pinkfish differentiates itself by enabling customers to utilize natural language prompts while leveraging a full-code backend for building AI workflows. She suggests that the “low-code” approach, while previously popular, is now too restrictive and has become largely obsolete.
Companies, she argues, prefer a solution that offers the power of a full-code backend combined with a user-friendly interface, rather than being limited to pre-coded components. As the AI agent market becomes increasingly saturated, she anticipates this approach will resonate with potential clients.
“Our focus is on delivering tangible value to complex, mission-critical use cases,” Kannan stated. “By combining agent-based functionality with determinism and a platform offering appropriate guardrails for all connections, we believe we are approaching this challenge differently.”
