Perplexity, the AI-driven search engine challenging Google, has launched Perplexity Labs. This new tool is designed for subscribers to the $20 monthly Pro plan and facilitates the creation of reports, spreadsheets, and dashboards.

The Perplexity Labs platform is currently accessible via web browsers, as well as on iOS and Android devices. Future availability is planned for Perplexity’s dedicated applications for both Mac and Windows operating systems.

Functionality and Design

According to a recent blog post, Perplexity Labs is intended to assist with both professional and personal projects. It’s engineered to dedicate extended processing time – typically 10 minutes or more – and utilizes supplementary tools for task completion.

These tools include advanced file generation and the creation of miniature applications. The launch of Labs coincides with similar developments, such as the release of a slide deck creation tool by the AI agent platform Manus.

AI-Powered Research and Creation

Perplexity Labs leverages AI to perform in-depth research and analysis. This process involves approximately 10 minutes of processing time and utilizes resources like web searches, code execution, and the generation of charts and images.

The platform is capable of producing interactive web applications and can write code to organize data, implement formulas, and construct documents. This allows for a versatile range of output formats.

All generated files – including charts, images, and code – are neatly organized within a dedicated tab for easy viewing and download. This feature streamlines project management and deliverable access.

Strategic Expansion and Future Outlook

While the concept appears promising, the inherent limitations of AI technology suggest that Labs may not consistently deliver perfect results. A comprehensive evaluation will require hands-on testing.

Perplexity has been increasingly focused on features tailored for corporate users, having introduced an enterprise plan last summer. This plan includes user management and “internal knowledge search” capabilities.

These strategic moves may be influenced by venture capital investors seeking a return on their investment. Perplexity is reportedly in discussions to secure up to $1 billion in funding, potentially valuing the company at $18 billion.
