Perplexity AI Comet Browser Now Available on Android

Perplexity Launches Comet AI Browser on Android
Perplexity, an AI-focused search company, has today released its Comet browser for Android devices. The initial debut of this AI-centric browser occurred in July, initially for desktop users, offering AI-enhanced search capabilities.
Key Features for Android Users
The Android version mirrors many of the functionalities found in the desktop iteration. Users are now able to designate Perplexity as their default search engine.
Furthermore, the assistant can be prompted with references to open tabs, enabling targeted questioning. A voice mode is also available, allowing for hands-free inquiries regarding the content of all currently open tabs.
The assistant’s capabilities extend to summarizing search results across multiple tabs, providing a consolidated overview of information.
Additional Capabilities and Future Updates
Comet is designed to assist with both research and online shopping. Users can observe the actions being undertaken by the Comet assistant in real-time. An integrated ad blocker is also included within the Android version.
Perplexity plans to introduce several new features in the coming weeks. These include a conversational agent capable of searching across websites and executing actions, as well as customizable shortcuts for the assistant to expedite common tasks.
A fully-featured password manager is also slated for release soon.
Recent Improvements to the Comet Assistant
Earlier this month, the Comet Assistant on desktop received an update. This enhancement allows it to more effectively handle complex, prolonged tasks, such as transferring data from websites into spreadsheet applications.
Platform Expansion and Partnerships
While initially launching on Android, Perplexity confirms that an iOS version is also in development. The prioritization of Android is attributed to requests from numerous carriers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) seeking to integrate Comet into their devices and solutions.
However, Perplexity has not announced any formal partnership agreements at this time.
Previously, the company collaborated with Motorola to preload its app on their devices. It remains unclear whether this agreement will extend to pre-installing the new Comet browser.
The Growing Landscape of AI Browsers
The development of AI browsers has garnered significant interest from various companies. Beyond Perplexity, OpenAI, Opera, and The Browser Company (now under Atlassian ownership) have all launched their own AI-powered browsers.
However, these releases have largely been limited to desktop platforms.
The Browser Company released Arc Search for mobile last year, but updates have been limited. The company has since shifted its focus to a new browser, Dia, which currently lacks a mobile version.
Security Considerations
These companies are actively striving to supplant established browsers like Chrome and Safari with AI-driven alternatives. Nevertheless, security experts have voiced concerns regarding potential vulnerabilities within AI agents, which could present security risks.
In October, Perplexity acknowledged these risks in a blog post, stating that the evolving threat landscape necessitates a fundamental re-evaluation of security protocols.
