Disable Google Instant & Google Suggest - A Step-by-Step Guide

Controlling Google Search Behavior: Disabling Instant, Preview, and Suggest

Many users value the innovative features offered by Google Search. Previous examinations have covered functionalities like Google Suggest and interesting applications of Google Instant for platforms such as YouTube.

However, it’s important for individuals to retain control over their search experience. Google has a reputation for making it challenging to permanently deactivate certain new features.

Even when options appear to disable recently introduced functionalities, these changes often aren't persistent. This article details methods for permanently disabling Google Instant, Google Instant Preview, and Google Suggest.

Disabling Google Instant and Instant Preview

Google Instant aims to display search results as you type. While intended to be helpful, it can sometimes be disruptive. Similarly, Google Instant Preview shows snippets of webpages directly in the search results.

These features can be disabled through a specific URL parameter. Adding &noj=1 to your Google Search URL will prevent Google Instant from functioning. To disable Google Instant Preview, append &noip=1 to the URL.

Permanently Disabling Google Suggest

Google Suggest, also known as autocomplete, predicts your search query as you enter it. While convenient for some, others find it intrusive or prefer to formulate their searches independently.

A workaround to disable Google Suggest involves modifying your Google Search URL. Adding &complete=0 to the end of the URL will effectively turn off the autocomplete feature.

Combining Disables for a Customized Experience

It is possible to combine these URL parameters to disable multiple features simultaneously. For example, to disable Google Instant, Google Instant Preview, and Google Suggest, you could use a URL like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=your+search+term&noj=1&noip=1&complete=0.

Remember that these methods are not officially supported by Google and may cease to function if Google updates its search algorithms. However, they currently provide a means to customize your search experience.

These techniques allow users to regain control over their Google Search experience, tailoring it to their individual preferences. By utilizing these URL parameters, you can disable features that you find distracting or unnecessary.

Disabling Google Suggest Functionality

Following the implementation of Google Instant, the ability to directly disable search suggestions was removed by Google. It now operates as a standard feature that cannot be switched off through conventional settings. However, workarounds are available.

Several methods can be employed to disable Google Suggest, though it’s important to note that these solutions also typically disable Google Instant.

Altering Your Browser's Default Homepage

Certain Google search landing pages still retain the functionality to disable Google Suggest:

  • Utilizing the complete=0 URL parameter will suppress suggestions. This can be integrated into local searches as well: http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0, http://www.google.co.uk/webhp?complete=0, and so on.
  • Accessing http://www.google.com/m provides the Google interface designed for mobile devices.
  • Visiting https://encrypted.google.com/ directs you to Google Search utilizing SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). This interface lacks the Google Instant feature and offers an option to disable suggestions.

Firefox Browser Solutions

Consider implementing one of the following approaches:

  • Employ AdBlock Plus to block all content originating from the directory: http://www.google.com/extern_js/.
  • Install the YesScript or NoScript extension and blacklist Google, which will disable JavaScript functionality across the site.
  • Utilize this Greasemonkey script (Note: adjustments may be necessary to ensure compatibility with your local Google version. Navigate to Tools -> Greasemonkey -> Manage User Scripts, select the script, and click "Add" next to the "Included Pages" field. Input your Google URL, such as http://www.google.com/*).
  • A potential solution involves modifying general.useragent.extra.firefox within about:config to prevent Google from identifying you as a Firefox user. Further information regarding the potential drawbacks of this approach can be found in this forum thread.

Google Chrome Browser Considerations

Disabling Google Suggest in Google Chrome presents greater challenges.

Selectively blocking JavaScript on specific websites is not easily achievable (refer to this post and this thread for further details). An extension called NotScripts [No Longer Available] was previously found to effectively disable Google Suggest within Google Chrome. (Note: Its long-term limitations haven’t been fully assessed, but it successfully addressed the primary objective).

If you are familiar with alternative, more effective methods for disabling Google Suggest in Google Chrome, please share your insights in the comments!

2. Deactivating Google Instant

It is possible to disable Google Instant while retaining the functionality of Google Suggest.

Many users find this feature undesirable and prefer to keep it deactivated. A method exists to disable it, but Google Instant may re-enable itself periodically, such as after browser cookies are cleared or upon re-logging into a Google account.

FireFox Browser

A FireFox extension can be utilized to permanently disable Google Instant, remembering user preferences even with frequent logins and logouts. However, clearing browser cookies will still circumvent this solution.

Alternative methods found online for disabling Google Instant often also disable Google Suggest. For a comprehensive list of these approaches, please consult the earlier section of this article.

Google Chrome Browser

Currently, a persistent solution to disable Google Instant in Chrome without also disabling Google Suggest has not been identified. Therefore, users may need to deactivate both features simultaneously if they wish to avoid Google Instant’s functionality. (Refer to the section above for details on disabling both features).

Deactivating Google Instant Preview

The AdBlock Plus extension, previously discussed, is capable of blocking Google Instant Preview functionality. Implementation requires the addition of specific filters within the extension’s settings.

Filter Configuration

To block the preview, incorporate the following filters into your AdBlock Plus preferences:

  • google.com##.vspi
  • google.com##.vspib
  • google.com###vspb

Credit for this solution is given to Lifehacker.

Alternatively, a Greasemonkey script exists that can disable the Live Preview feature. However, this script preserves the magnifying glass icon, although its functionality will be impaired.

Have you successfully disabled any of these Google features? Feel free to share your methods and insights!
