Save Money with PayPal Mass Payments: A How-To Guide

Discover Significant Savings with PayPal Mass Payments
Recently, here at MakeUseOf, we uncovered a valuable strategy for compensating our staff writers. Utilizing PayPal’s bulk batch payment manager – known as Mass Payment – can result in substantial reductions in PayPal fees compared to sending individual online payments.
The extent of these savings was quite surprising, prompting us to share this information. We recognize that many individuals and businesses making online wage payments via PayPal may be incurring unnecessary expenses.
Understanding PayPal Fees
Standard PayPal fees for domestic transactions typically range from 1.9-2.9% + USD$0.30. However, international PayPal fees can rise to 3.9% + USD$0.30. Consequently, a US$100 payment could attract a fee of US$4.20, usually borne by the recipient. Mass Payments, however, are subject to a considerably smaller fee structure.
Freelancers receiving regular wages through PayPal will likely recognize the impact of these fees on their earnings. These costs are often avoidable; simply updating payment methods can eliminate them.
It’s important to remember that PayPal is largely passing on bank and processing fees associated with individual transactions. By encouraging the use of Mass Payments, you may even be saving PayPal money yourself.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Mass Payments
Let's outline the process, allowing you to share this article with your accounting team. Highlighting that Mass Payment can also streamline accounting records is beneficial.
Firstly, the sender must possess a verified PayPal Premier or Business account. Upgrading an existing account is straightforward, but requires verification of the associated email address and bank account.
Secondly, sufficient funds must be available within the sender’s PayPal account. Credit cards are not accepted for Mass Payments.
Mass Payments can be sent to any valid email address. If a recipient doesn't already have a PayPal account linked to that address, it can be easily added. The sender only needs the email address and the desired payment amount. All payments within a single Mass Payment transaction must be in the same currency.
The sender will need to create a tab-delimited file containing recipient email addresses, currency codes, and payment amounts. This can be easily generated from Excel by saving the file as "Text (Tab Delimited)". The first column should contain email addresses, the second payment amounts, and the third the appropriate currency code (refer to PayPal’s documentation for codes). Optional columns allow for identifiers for accounting purposes and personalized messages for each recipient.
To initiate a Mass Payment, locate the "Mass Payment" link at the bottom of the PayPal webpage while logged in.
This link directs you to a comprehensive overview of Mass Payment, including guides, fee information, currency codes, and illustrative examples. Select "Make a Mass Payment" to begin the process.
The file upload interface for Mass Payments is user-friendly. A generic subject and body can be added to the email notification sent with each payment. For larger organizations or those preferring automation, the PayPal API also provides an option for sending Mass Payments.
Mass Payments are processed instantly, granting recipients immediate access to the funds for use or withdrawal.
Important Considerations
Exercise caution and ensure the recipient is trustworthy and has fulfilled their obligations, as PayPal Mass Payments cannot be cancelled once processed.
If the recipient has a personal PayPal account within the same country as the sender, and the sender isn't using a credit or debit card, regular payments may be free. However, if the recipient has a Premier or Business account, or resides in a different country, Mass Payments offer lower fees. With standard payments, the sender can choose who bears the fees, but with Mass Payment, the sender is always responsible for PayPal fees. Discuss this with recipients to determine the most advantageous method.
