PayPal and OpenAI Partner: ChatGPT Shopping Now Available

PayPal Integrates with ChatGPT for AI-Powered Shopping
PayPal announced on Tuesday a new initiative to integrate its services with OpenAI’s Instant Checkout feature. This collaboration will allow users to complete purchases directly within ChatGPT, with rollout expected to begin in 2026.
Agentic Commerce Protocol Adoption
The foundation of this integration is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). This open-source specification, developed by OpenAI, facilitates the availability of merchant products within AI applications. Consequently, shoppers will be able to utilize AI agents to make purchases.
OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, released in September, streamlines the purchasing process. It enables users to confirm order details, shipping information, and payment methods without exiting the ChatGPT interface.
Enhanced Security and Payment Options
Utilizing PayPal wallets for checkout will provide both buyer and seller protection. The company will also offer dispute resolution services as part of this process.
Furthermore, PayPal is providing a separate payments API to manage card payments directly within ChatGPT.
Expanded Merchant Visibility
Starting next year, merchants utilizing PayPal products will gain increased visibility on ChatGPT. Initial product categories featured will include apparel, fashion, beauty, home improvement, and electronics.
Merchants will not be required to develop custom integrations. PayPal will manage merchant routing and payment processing seamlessly in the background.
Agentic Commerce Suite Launch
PayPal is also introducing an agentic commerce suite. This suite will empower merchants to showcase their catalogs within various AI applications.
The suite will also facilitate payment acceptance across different AI platforms and provide valuable insights into consumer behavior.
Strategic Partnerships in AI Commerce
PayPal has been proactively establishing itself as a preferred payments partner within the growing landscape of AI-driven shopping experiences. This is driven by the increasing reliance on AI applications for everyday tasks.
In May, a partnership with Perplexity enabled checkout functionality within the AI search tool. Subsequently, in September, PayPal announced its adoption of Google’s Agent Payments Protocol to integrate its products across various Google platforms.
Internal Adoption of OpenAI Technologies
Beyond the commerce partnership, PayPal is extending enterprise access to ChatGPT to all its employees. This move aims to enhance productivity by allowing engineers to leverage OpenAI’s coding tools, including Codex.
Executive Statement
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” stated Alex Chriss, president and CEO of PayPal.
He continued, “By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases.”
