PayPal Mobile - Pay On The Go

PayPal Mobile: A Convenient Digital Wallet
As previously discussed in our 2008 article detailing useful PayPal tools, the online payment platform has since developed applications for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry devices.
This mobile app offers a level of convenience comparable to carrying physical cash, allowing for seamless transactions.
Many smartphone users, along with those who frequently utilize debit cards and online services, demonstrate a preference for digital finances over traditional paper money.
Key Features and Functionality
The PayPal mobile application proves valuable in a variety of scenarios, extending beyond simple purchases.
It facilitates the direct transfer of funds to other PayPal users, eliminating the need for checks, money orders, or credit cards.
Version 3.2 of PayPal Mobile introduces several beneficial features designed to streamline monetary transactions.
The following outlines the process of configuring the app on an iPhone, though it's important to recognize that certain functionalities may be limited to users within the United States.
The app allows users to manage their finances and make payments with ease, mirroring the accessibility of online accounts.
It provides a secure and efficient alternative to traditional payment methods.
Configuring Your Mobile Device for PayPal
This guide presumes you possess an existing PayPal account and have a foundational understanding of its operation. Prior to exploring PayPal Mobile’s functionalities, it is recommended that you incorporate specific PayPal details into your mobile device’s address book.
This proactive step streamlines access to essential resources and support features.
Essential Contacts and Resources
The following information should be added to your mobile device for convenient access.
- Include the PayPal customer support telephone number: 1-800-427-9725.
- Register the shortcode for PayPal text messaging services: 729-725.
- Bookmark the URL rolbe.com/paypal.html – a PayPal calculator website that will be discussed further.
- Save the email address spook@paypal.com for forwarding any suspected phishing emails masquerading as legitimate PayPal communications.
Adding these details will allow for quick access to support, tools, and security measures when using PayPal on your mobile device.
Maintaining this information readily available enhances both the convenience and security of your mobile PayPal experience.
PayPal Mobile Features
Text Messaging with PayPal
A primary function of PayPal Mobile is the ability to monitor your account balance. This can be accomplished in a couple of different ways using your mobile phone. Accessing your account through an internet-connected web browser is one option.
Alternatively, you can send a text message directly to PayPal to receive your current account balance. This provides a quick and convenient way to stay informed.
To check your balance via text, simply send a message to 729725, using either "BAL" or "BALANCE" as the message content.
The same shortcode can also be utilized for both sending funds and requesting money from others.
To initiate a payment, compose a text message that reads, "Send [dollar amount] to [recipient’s phone number or email address]". To request funds, use the format "Get [dollar amount] from [recipient’s phone number or email address]".
Further instructions, including details on other available commands, can be obtained by sending the text message "help".
Linking Your Mobile Number
To enable text messaging functionality with your PayPal account, you must first link your mobile phone number. This is done within your account settings.
Navigate to the Profile tab and then select Add or Edit Phone Number. Completing this process will allow you to receive text message updates and utilize the text-based payment features.
Utilizing the PayPal App
Recent updates to the PayPal Mobile application now allow users to utilize a 4-digit PIN for authentication. This offers a more streamlined login experience.
This PIN can be used in place of your full account password, enhancing convenience and security.
Additional PayPal Mobile Features
Functioning similarly to SMS-based money transfers, the PayPal Mobile application provides dedicated buttons on its main screen for initiating these types of transactions.

While I haven’t personally tested this functionality, a “Bump” feature is also available. This allows for money transactions by physically bringing compatible smartphones together, provided both have the mobile app installed.

Furthermore, the app facilitates bill splitting when dining with a group. You can configure individual amounts owed and then send or request payments directly through your PayPal account.
The cost associated with these money exchanges is likely a key consideration. Here’s a direct quote from PayPal regarding their fee structure:
Sending money to family and friends within the U.S. is free when funded by your PayPal balance or bank account, or a combination of both.
A fee applies when sending personal payments using a debit or credit card. In the U.S., this fee is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the transaction amount. For instance, sending $100.00 USD via credit card incurs a $3.20 USD fee ($2.90 + $0.30). The sender can choose to cover this fee or have the recipient pay it. Recipients can decline payments if they are unwilling to pay the fee.
If you need to determine the exact deduction from a credit card payment, you can utilize the PayPal Fee Calculator, although it may no longer be functional.

Beyond basic transfers, PayPal Mobile offers several additional services. These include the ability to deposit checks by simply photographing them, with funds typically available within five business days.
Like the web-based version, the mobile app supports charitable donations, group money collection, and the setting of payment reminders.
From my own usage, I’ve consistently found PayPal to be a secure platform for sending and receiving funds. I occasionally receive phishing emails falsely claiming to be from PayPal, which I promptly forward to their security team.
