Patreon Launches 24/7 Live Video Streaming

Patreon Introduces Native Livestreaming Capabilities
Patreon is currently testing a new, integrated livestreaming feature. This development aims to attract a wider range of content creators and provide them with enhanced earning potential.
Initial Rollout and Availability
The feature is being released to a limited group of beta testers this week. A broader release to all users is anticipated during the coming summer months.
Feature Set and Functionality
Patreon’s livestreaming functionality mirrors those found on other popular platforms. It includes a real-time chat interface for fan interaction, utilizing comments and emoji reactions.
Creators can also pre-schedule their livestreams for better audience engagement. Moderation tools are provided, allowing creators to assign individuals to manage the live chat.
A Shift Away From Third-Party Tools
Previously, Patreon creators often depended on external services like Crowdcast, YouTube, OBS (Open Broadcaster Software), and Vimeo to host their live content.
Patreon’s core argument for native livestreaming is the avoidance of ad-filled, distracting feeds common on other platforms.
Accessibility and Streaming Duration
Creators can now initiate livestreams directly through the Patreon mobile application or via the web interface.
A significant advantage is the absence of time restrictions on stream length. Creators are able to stream continuously, even for 24/7 broadcasts, if desired.
Comparison to Other Platforms
Streaming duration limits on competing platforms are as follows:
- TikTok Live: 60-minute limit
- Twitch: 48-hour limit for continuous streaming
- YouTube: Unlimited streaming, but limited to approximately 10 streams per day
However, upload limits on total videos may apply depending on the creator’s subscription plan.
Monetization Opportunities
Livestreaming presents new avenues for revenue generation. Creators have the option to restrict streams to paying members, maximizing income.
Alternatively, they can offer free livestreams to broaden their audience reach. Recordings of livestreams can be shared with fans, potentially as a paid, one-time access video.
Current Limitations
Currently, a native co-hosting feature is not available. Creators who wish to co-host will need to utilize integrations with tools like OBS or Streamlabs.
Future Developments
While Patreon has not revealed detailed future plans, they are actively exploring additional ways for creators to monetize their livestreams.
The company spokesperson highlighted the membership gifting feature as a potential area for integration with future livestreaming functionality.
