Particle AI News Reader - Now Available on the Web

Particle Launches AI-Powered Newsreader on the Web
Particle, a company developing an AI-powered newsreader with a focus on supporting publishers, has expanded its reach by launching a web-based version of its product. The announcement, made on Tuesday, introduces Particle.news, a platform designed to connect news consumers with headlines and AI summaries from diverse sources.
Website Features and Categories
The new website allows users to explore news across a wide range of categories. These include Technology, Sports, Entertainment, Politics, Science, Crime, Economics, and Video Games. Users can also easily access the most popular stories of the day directly from the homepage.
Enhanced News Understanding with AI
Particle aims to provide a novel way for individuals to stay informed through the integration of AI technology. Similar to its existing mobile application, the website offers AI tools intended to improve news comprehension.
Rather than simply providing condensed bullet-point summaries, Particle extracts key quotations from articles. Furthermore, it enables users to pose questions about the story content through an AI chatbot. Currently, the website displays previously asked questions and their corresponding answers, though direct interaction with the AI is not yet available.
Exploring Entities and Related Information
While browsing news on Particle, users can access “entity pages” for deeper understanding. These pages provide detailed information about specific people, products, or organizations mentioned within the articles.
For example, highlighted terms like “Trump,” “Knicks,” or “Nintendo Switch” within headlines or summaries will link to pages containing foundational information sourced from Wikipedia, alongside links to additional related news coverage.
Supporting Publishers Through Linkage
Particle emphasizes its commitment to publishers by prominently displaying links to the original news sources alongside its AI-generated summaries. Initial mobile testing revealed that readers frequently clicked through to publisher websites via these links.
As a result, Particle has begun establishing partnerships with publishers such as Reuters, Fortune, and the AFP to ensure their links are displayed more visibly.
The website also includes links to related reporting at the conclusion of each AI summary, encouraging users to explore further coverage.
Seamless Sharing and App Integration
Sharing links from the Particle mobile app now directs users to dedicated landing pages on the website. This expands access to Particle’s content, even for those who haven’t installed the app.
A Responsible Approach to AI in News
The integration of AI into news and journalism has faced scrutiny, particularly following attempts to automate reporting with AI bots. Particle’s founders, however, are dedicated to leveraging AI to enhance reader understanding without diverting traffic from publishers.
Company Background and Funding
Particle was established in 2023 by Sara Beykpour, formerly the senior director of product management at Twitter, and Marcel Molina, a former senior engineer at both Twitter and Tesla.
The company has secured $4.4 million in seed funding and a $10.9 million Series A round led by Lightspeed.
Competition and Industry Trends
Particle is joining a growing number of initiatives utilizing AI for news summarization. Yahoo, formerly the parent company of TechCrunch, acquired the Artifact news app from Instagram’s co-founders to integrate AI-powered features into its News app.
Organizations like Bloomberg, Gannett (USA Today), and The Wall Street Journal are also actively experimenting with AI article summaries. However, users may be less tolerant of errors in AI summaries on news outlets’ own websites compared to a dedicated AI summarization application.
