Ororatech Secures $7M Investment for Wildfire Warning Technology

Early Wildfire Detection from Space: OroraTech Secures €5.8 Million
As wildfires increasingly pose a significant annual threat, the ability to detect and respond to them rapidly is crucial for the well-being of the entire planet. Space-based observation offers the optimal perspective for achieving this goal.
OroraTech's Global Wildfire Warning System
OroraTech, a German startup, is developing a constellation of small satellites designed to power a comprehensive global wildfire warning system. A recent €5.8 million (~$7 million) Series A funding round will facilitate the initial stages of this project.
Each year, wildfires consume vast areas of forest, inflicting substantial damage on both people and the environment. Early detection and intervention are paramount, as fires that grow beyond a certain size become exceedingly difficult to control.
Challenges with Traditional Detection Methods
Wildfires can ignite in remote, expansive forested regions. Every minute is critical in mitigating their spread. Conventional methods, such as watch towers and helicopter patrols, may lack the speed and precision needed to effectively address this escalating threat.
Furthermore, these traditional approaches can be costly and present inherent dangers for personnel involved in fire detection and suppression efforts.
OroraTech's Satellite Constellation
OroraTech intends to deploy a constellation of approximately 100 satellites. These satellites will be equipped with specialized infrared cameras to continuously monitor the globe – particularly areas prone to wildfires.
The system aims to identify fires exceeding 10 meters in size within a timeframe of just half an hour.

The Bavarian company has already validated its service using data from more than a dozen existing satellites. This funding will enable the launch of their first dedicated satellite later this year, facilitated by Spire.
This initial satellite is a compact, shoebox-sized unit featuring a custom infrared sensor. Onboard machine learning capabilities will streamline image processing.
Expansion Plans
Plans are in place to launch an additional fourteen satellites by 2023, following thorough testing and refinement of the initial satellite’s performance.
“To enhance coverage and provide earlier warnings, we are committed to launching our own dedicated satellite constellation,” stated CEO and co-founder Thomas Grübler in a press release. “We are pleased to have the support of distinguished investors who will contribute both capital and technological expertise to our endeavors.”

The funding round was led by Findus Venture and Ananda Impact Ventures, with participation from APEX Ventures, BayernKapital, Clemens Kaiser, SpaceTec Capital, and Ingo Baumann.
The company originated from research conducted by the founders at TUM (Technical University of Munich), which retains an ownership stake.
“The progress they’ve made with limited resources is truly remarkable, and we are proud to be part of this inspiring NewSpace initiative,” commented Wolfgang Neubert of APEX Ventures.
Competitive Landscape
OroraTech is not alone in the field of Earth-based infrared imagery. SatelliteVu recently secured funding to launch a smaller constellation focused on urban monitoring. ConstellR, meanwhile, targets the agricultural sector with precision crop management solutions.
Looking Ahead
With this new funding, OroraTech can expand its operations and enhance its wildfire detection services. However, improvements will likely not be implemented before the wildfire season begins in the northern hemisphere this year.
