Installing an operating system and media center software like XBMC represents only a preliminary step in utilizing the Raspberry Pi’s full potential.
Simply booting up and using the device, though practical, doesn't unlock the complete range of possibilities offered by this compact computer.
Configuration is Key
Dedicated time spent configuring your Raspberry Pi is crucial for optimal performance.
My operating system of choice for the platform is Raspbian, a Debian-based Linux distribution specifically adapted for the Raspberry Pi.
Exploring Raspbian's Options
Raspbian provides numerous configuration options that are worth investigating.
These settings allow for customization and fine-tuning to suit individual needs and preferences.
Taking advantage of these features ensures you are getting the most out of your Raspberry Pi.
Raspberry Pi Configuration After Installation
This document details the utilization of the raspi-config menu, which appears following the installation of the Raspbian operating system on your Raspberry Pi, as previously outlined.
Many users, eager to begin working with their Raspberry Pi, may initially bypass the raspi-config menu options. However, it’s good to know these settings can be accessed by opening a terminal window and entering the following command:
sudo raspi-config

Be aware that some menu items may require a short time to load, so patience is advised. Navigation is accomplished using the arrow keys and the Enter key on your keyboard to make selections.
- info – This option displays a cautionary message regarding excessive customization of the Raspberry Pi installation.
- expand_rootfs – This function expands the file system to utilize the entire SD card (if larger than 4GB), rather than being limited to pre-defined partitions.
- overscan – This setting adjusts the display to eliminate any black borders that may appear, ensuring full visibility on standard monitors. Activation requires a reboot; the /boot/config.txt file can be edited to revert changes if needed.
- configure_keyboard – Allows you to select your preferred keyboard layout and language. The default is UK English, with comprehensive onscreen guidance.
- change_pass – The default login credentials are username: pi and password: raspberry. For enhanced security, utilize this option to establish a new, unique password.
- change_locale – This menu, which may load slowly, sets the locale to en_GB UTF-8 UTF-8 by default, configuring the system for English language input using the UTF-8 character set. The spacebar toggles selections for multi-language support.
- change_timezone – This requires a two-step selection process: first your continent, then your city. Expect a slightly longer loading time.
- memory_split – This option controls the allocation of memory between standard processes and the video core. Available choices are 32MiB, 64MiB, or 128MiB for the video core. The default of 64MiB is recommended, while 128MiB is optimal for running XBMC.
- overclock – Enables processor overclocking. This is not advised unless you possess a thorough understanding of the potential consequences.
- ssh – Enabled by default, this feature provides command-line access to your Raspberry Pi from another computer using an SSH client like Putty. Consider disabling it if your Pi is directly connected to the internet.
- boot_behaviour – This setting determines the initial boot mode: desktop or command line.
- Update – Initiates a system update for your Raspberry Pi. Further details are provided below.

Keep in mind that applying these settings will necessitate a reboot, which may initially result in booting to the command line interface. If this occurs, simply execute the startx command to launch the graphical user interface.
Enhancing Raspberry Pi Security
Beyond the initial configuration settings, dedicating time to securing your Raspberry Pi is crucial for its ongoing protection.
The default password on your Raspberry Pi should be altered promptly. This can be achieved through the Raspi-config tool, as previously described, or by utilizing the conventional Linux passwd command.
A paramount security measure involves verifying that all available security updates are installed. If your Raspberry Pi will not be connected to a network, this step may be less critical; however, it is generally essential for devices with internet access.
Although Raspi-config includes an option for managing updates, a more flexible approach is available.
Access the terminal and execute these commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Keep in mind that downloading and installing these updates can require a significant amount of time, so patience is advised.
