OpenAI to Collaborate with U.S. National Laboratories on AI Projects
OpenAI has announced its intention to provide access to its AI models for use by U.S. National Laboratories. This network of research and development labs falls under the purview of the Department of Energy.
The collaboration will encompass projects related to nuclear weapons security and a variety of other scientific endeavors.
Deployment and Access
According to reports from CNBC, OpenAI will partner with Microsoft, its primary investor, to implement an AI model on the supercomputer located at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
This model will function as a communal resource, accessible to researchers from Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia National Labs. Its application will span numerous research programs.
Focus on Nuclear Defense
A significant aspect of this initiative involves research pertaining to nuclear defense, a subject that has generated some debate.
OpenAI states that its support will be directed towards the U.S. National Laboratories’ efforts in “mitigating the dangers of nuclear conflict and safeguarding nuclear materials and weaponry.”
Researchers possessing the necessary security clearances will also be offered opportunities for consultation on these critical projects.
