ChatGPT Signups: OpenAI Tests Phone Number Verification

OpenAI Simplifies ChatGPT Signup Process

OpenAI has initiated testing of a new feature allowing prospective ChatGPT users to register using only a phone number, eliminating the need for an email address. This change was first observed by software engineer Tibor Blaho.

Limited Beta Availability

Currently, this functionality is being tested in a beta phase within the United States and India. However, certain limitations are in place for users utilizing this method.

Restrictions for Phone Number Sign-Ups

Accounts created solely with a phone number cannot be upgraded to OpenAI’s premium subscription plans, such as ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro, without subsequent email verification.

Furthermore, multi-factor authentication is unavailable without a registered email address. Once a phone number is associated with a ChatGPT account, it becomes blocked from being used to create additional accounts.

Phone Number Reuse Policy

OpenAI clarifies on its website’s Q&A section that utilizing previously registered or reused phone numbers will result in errors.

Currently, there is no solution to this issue, and users are advised to either contact support or await a system update planned for 2025 that may resolve the problem.

Geographic Limitations

OpenAI has stated that there are no current plans to extend the phone number-only signup option to regions outside of the U.S. and India.

Efforts to Expand User Base

In an effort to accelerate growth, OpenAI is actively exploring methods to reduce barriers to access for its products, particularly ChatGPT.

Recent Accessibility Initiatives

In December, OpenAI launched a voice-based ChatGPT experience for U.S. users, offering 15 minutes of free monthly conversation. Simultaneously, ChatGPT was integrated into WhatsApp, albeit with limited functionality and a daily exchange cap.

ChatGPT User Statistics and Revenue

ChatGPT currently boasts over 300 million weekly users. These users collectively contribute significantly to the company’s revenue.

Reports from CNBC indicate that OpenAI projected revenue of $3.7 billion for 2024.

Financial Performance and Future Plans

Despite substantial revenue, OpenAI is not yet profitable.

The company reportedly incurred losses of approximately $5 billion in fiscal year 2024, despite raising over $6.6 billion in funding. These expenditures include costs associated with office space, personnel, and AI training infrastructure.

OpenAI is considering increasing subscription prices and implementing usage-based pricing models for certain services, as the most expensive plan is currently operating at a loss, according to CEO Sam Altman.
