OpenAI Delays GPT-5, Confirms Release of O3

OpenAI's Revised Model Release Schedule
Following the postponement of its o3 reasoning model's consumer release in February, OpenAI has announced plans to launch both o3 and its successor, o4-mini, within the next few weeks.
GPT-5 Development and Integration
According to a recent post by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on X, this change in strategy is directly linked to the development of GPT-5. The company previously indicated that GPT-5 would be a unified model, integrating advanced reasoning capabilities.
Altman stated that GPT-5 is now projected to be significantly more capable than initially anticipated. However, integrating all components has proven more challenging than expected.
Capacity is also a key consideration, as OpenAI aims to ensure sufficient resources to meet what they predict will be an unprecedented level of demand.
GPT-5 Rollout Timeline
The rollout of GPT-5 is now expected “in a few months,” a delay from the original schedule.
GPT-5 Access Levels
OpenAI intends to provide unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at a “standard intelligence setting,” with limitations based on “abuse thresholds.”
- ChatGPT Plus subscribers will have access to GPT-5 at a “higher level of intelligence.”
- ChatGPT Pro subscribers will be able to utilize GPT-5 at an “even higher level of intelligence.”
Enhanced GPT-5 Features
GPT-5 will incorporate a variety of features, including voice, Canvas, search, and deep research. These features have been progressively launched within ChatGPT over recent months.
A primary objective for OpenAI is to unify its models, creating systems capable of utilizing all available tools, determining appropriate processing time, and providing broad utility across diverse tasks.
Competitive Landscape and Open Models
OpenAI is experiencing increased competition from companies like DeepSeek, a Chinese AI lab, which have embraced an “open” model launch strategy.
Unlike OpenAI’s approach, these competitors make their models accessible to the AI community for experimentation and potential commercial applications.
Upcoming Open Language Model
In addition to o3, o3 pro, o4-mini, and GPT-5, OpenAI is preparing to release its first open language model since GPT‑2. This new model will also feature reasoning capabilities and undergo thorough safety evaluations.
