ChatGPT User Growth: 700 Million Weekly Users Projected - OpenAI

ChatGPT Achieves Significant User Growth
The adoption rate of ChatGPT as a widely-used application is demonstrably increasing, with projections indicating the chatbot will reach 700 million weekly active users this week, according to the company’s statements.
Previously, the application had surpassed 500 million weekly active users by the end of March, as highlighted by Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT’s application division, in a recent post on X.
Rapid Expansion
Turley also indicated that the app has experienced a fourfold increase in usage compared to the same period last year.
He expressed gratitude to the development team for continually enhancing ChatGPT’s functionality and furthering the company’s objective of making AI accessible and beneficial to all.
Boost from New Features
The application’s popularity saw a notable surge following the introduction of an enhanced image-generation capability, driven by the GPT-4 model, in March.
Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s COO, reported in early April that over 130 million users had collectively generated more than 700 million images within a few days of the feature’s release.
Subscriber Base Growth
A corresponding increase in paid subscriptions has also been observed.
Lightcap revealed last week that ChatGPT now boasts 5 million paying business users, a substantial rise from the 3 million reported in June.
User Engagement Metrics
Data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower indicates a high level of user engagement with ChatGPT.
- Users are utilizing the platform for an average of more than 12 days each month.
- This level of engagement places ChatGPT behind only Google and X in terms of monthly usage.
The report further suggests that users dedicate an average of 16 minutes daily to the application as of the first half of 2025.
