OpenAI Image Generator Now Available to Everyone

OpenAI's GPT-4o Image Generator Now Widely Accessible
OpenAI has announced the general availability of its new image generator, which is driven by the GPT-4o model. This announcement was made by CEO Sam Altman via a post on X.
Previously, access to this functionality was restricted to subscribers of ChatGPT. Now, all users can utilize the image generation capabilities.
Usage Limits and Initial Demand
The exact number of images free-tier users can create remains unspecified. However, Altman previously indicated a daily limit of three images per user.
Upon its initial release, the image generator experienced an overwhelming surge in popularity. Altman reported that the demand was so substantial it caused significant strain on the company’s GPUs.
Copyright Concerns and Misuse
The tool quickly became known for its ability to replicate the artistic style of Studio Ghibli, a renowned Japanese animation studio. This raised questions regarding copyright infringement and the data used to train the model.
Instances of the generator being used to create fabricated documents, like false restaurant receipts, also surfaced.
An OpenAI representative informed TechCrunch that all generated images contain metadata identifying them as originating from ChatGPT. The company also stated it actively addresses images that breach its usage policies.
Recent Funding and User Growth
On Monday, OpenAI revealed it secured $40 billion in funding, with SoftBank leading the investment. This funding round values the company at $300 billion.
Furthermore, ChatGPT has reached a significant milestone, boasting 500 million weekly active users and 700 million monthly active users.
These figures demonstrate the platform’s widespread adoption and growing influence in the field of artificial intelligence.
