OpenAI Investigates ChatGPT Account-Based Sign-Ins

OpenAI is currently investigating methods that would allow users to utilize their ChatGPT accounts for logging into applications developed by other companies. This information was published on the company’s website on Tuesday.

Currently, OpenAI is assessing the level of developer interest in incorporating this functionality into their respective applications.

Rapid Growth of ChatGPT

ChatGPT is experiencing rapid adoption and is quickly establishing itself as a leading consumer application globally. It currently boasts approximately 600 million monthly active users.

To leverage this substantial user base, OpenAI appears focused on expanding its presence into additional consumer-facing sectors, including areas like online retail, social networking platforms, and personal electronic devices.

The introduction of a “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature could position OpenAI to compete more directly with major technology corporations – including Apple, Google, and Microsoft – which provide a diverse range of online services and streamlined sign-in options for third-party applications.

Initial Developer Preview

Earlier in the month, OpenAI initiated a preview of the “Sign in with ChatGPT” functionality within Codex CLI, its open-source AI coding tool designed for terminal use.

This feature enabled developers to link their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their respective API accounts.

As an incentive, OpenAI provided Plus subscribers with $5 in API credits and Pro users with $50 in API credits for utilizing the “Sign in with ChatGPT” option.

Broad Integration Potential

OpenAI is demonstrating interest in integrating the sign-in service with a wide spectrum of companies.

The developer interest form requests information regarding the user base of each application, categorizing them from small entities with under 1,000 weekly users to large-scale applications exceeding 100 million weekly users.

The form also inquires about current monetization strategies for AI features and whether developers are existing customers of the OpenAI API.

Future Outlook

In 2023, CEO Sam Altman indicated that the company was considering a “sign in with OpenAI” feature for potential implementation in 2024.

However, it now seems that OpenAI is actively developing this capability further in 2025.

The timeline for a public release of the sign-in feature for ChatGPT users, as well as the number of companies participating in the initiative, remains currently unknown.

OpenAI did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment from TechCrunch.
