ChatGPT India: OpenAI Launches Affordable Sub-$5 Plan

OpenAI Launches ChatGPT GO in India

OpenAI has introduced a new, more accessible paid subscription option for ChatGPT in India, known as ChatGPT GO. This plan is priced at ₹399 per month, equivalent to approximately $4.60.

This new offering is significantly more affordable when compared to the existing ChatGPT Plus Plan, which costs ₹1,999 (around $23) monthly.

Localized Pricing and Payment Options

The company recently enabled local currency pricing for all its subscription tiers. Alongside this launch, users in India will now have the ability to make payments using UPI (Unified Payments Interface), the nation’s widely adopted payment system.

Enhanced Capabilities with ChatGPT GO

According to Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, subscribers to the ChatGPT GO plan will experience a tenfold increase in message capacity, image generation capabilities, and file upload allowances compared to the free version.

Furthermore, the plan is designed to provide improved memory retention, leading to more tailored and personalized responses, as stated by Turley.

Strategic Rollout and User Feedback

“A key request from our users has been to make ChatGPT more affordable!” Turley explained. “We are initially launching Go in India to gather feedback before considering expansion to other regions.”

Cost Comparison and Accessibility

Prior to this launch, the Plus Plan, when converted to local currency, exceeded $20 for Indian users. The Go Plan presents a more budget-friendly alternative for individuals primarily utilizing ChatGPT for chat, image creation, and file handling.

Confirmation of Leaked Information

Tibor Blaho, a software engineer known for accurately predicting upcoming AI product releases, had previously hinted at this plan and its specifications.

Geographic Restrictions and Future Expansion

Currently, OpenAI is limiting the availability of this plan to India. However, the company’s support documentation indicates ongoing efforts to broaden its reach to additional territories.

Growth in ChatGPT User Base

Nick Turley recently reported that ChatGPT now boasts over 700 million weekly users globally, a substantial increase from the 500 million recorded in March.

Following the launch of its updated image-generation feature in March, OpenAI has observed a surge in usage within India.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently mentioned in a podcast that India represents the company’s second-largest market.

With the introduction of the Go Plan, OpenAI aims to capitalize on this growing market presence.

App Download and Revenue Statistics

According to app analytics firm Appfigures, India leads in ChatGPT app downloads across all platforms, accounting for over 29 million downloads in the last 90 days.

Despite this high download volume, revenue generated from Indian users during this period amounted to $3.6 million.

Competitive Landscape and Market Trends

This strategic move is expected to encourage greater subscription adoption among Indian consumers, given the competitive pricing.

Other AI companies are also actively pursuing strategies to attract users from India’s substantial internet user base, exceeding 850 million.

For example, Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to offer complimentary Perplexity Pro subscriptions.

Similarly, Google has provided a free AI Pro Plan to students in India for a one-year period.

Expected Impact on Subscription Rates

While OpenAI’s approach does not involve offering free services, the implementation of localized and affordable pricing is anticipated to improve ChatGPT’s subscription conversion rate in India.
