OpenAI Acquires Xcode Coding Assistant Alex Team - AI News

OpenAI Acquires Alex Team, Signaling Trend of "Acqui-hires"
The practice of acqui-hires – acquiring a company primarily for its talent – appears to be gaining traction. The development team responsible for Alex, a widely-used tool facilitating the integration of AI models into Apple’s Xcode environment, is now part of OpenAI.
Alex's Mission and OpenAI's Codex Division
Daniel Edrisian, founder of Alex, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that his team is joining OpenAI’s Codex division. This division is specifically focused on the development of OpenAI’s AI coding assistant.
Impact of Apple's Xcode Updates
Founded in 2024 and backed by Y Combinator, Alex aimed to seamlessly incorporate AI models into Xcode. However, Apple recently enhanced Xcode to natively support integration with ChatGPT and other AI models, eliminating the need for third-party tools. Whether this influenced the team’s decision to join OpenAI was not disclosed by Edrisian.
Alex's Achievements
Edrisian highlighted the initial challenges faced by the Alex team. “Initially, Xcode lacked any AI capabilities. Creating a “Cursor for Xcode” seemed ambitious, yet we successfully achieved it,” he stated in a post. “Ultimately, we developed a leading coding agent specifically for iOS and MacOS applications.”
Future of the Alex Application
According to a post on Alex’s blog, existing users will continue to receive support. However, the application will no longer be available for download after October 1st. The company confirmed that no new features will be added, but they will maintain the product for current users as long as demand persists.
Team Size and OpenAI Confirmation
Alex’s Y Combinator profile indicates a team of three individuals dedicated to the coding tool. It remains uncertain whether all team members are transitioning to OpenAI.
A request for comment has been sent to OpenAI, and this article will be updated upon receiving a response.
OpenAI's History with "Acqui-hires"
OpenAI has previously employed a similar strategy, focusing on acquiring teams rather than entire companies. This week, OpenAI announced the acquisition of product testing startup Statsig for a reported $1.1 billion.
Here's a summary of key points:
- The Alex team is joining OpenAI’s Codex division.
- Apple’s Xcode updates may have played a role in the decision.
- Existing Alex users will continue to receive support for a limited time.
- OpenAI is increasingly utilizing the “acqui-hire” model.
