OpenAI Co-founder John Schulman Leaves Anthropic

John Schulman Departs Anthropic After Brief Tenure
Reports indicate that John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI and a highly regarded AI researcher, has left Anthropic after a period of just five months.
From ChatGPT Architect to Anthropic
Schulman is widely recognized as a key figure in the development of ChatGPT. He transitioned from OpenAI to Anthropic, a direct competitor, in August of the previous year.
His decision to join Anthropic was publicly shared on X (formerly Twitter), where he explained his motivation. He expressed a desire to concentrate more intently on AI alignment – the critical field dedicated to ensuring artificial intelligence operates as designed – and to participate in more practical, technical endeavors.
Schulman stated, “I believe I can gain new perspectives and do research alongside people deeply engaged with the topics I’m most interested in,” when announcing his move.
Current Status and Anthropic's Response
Currently, Schulman has not made any public statements regarding his exit from Anthropic, nor has he revealed his future plans.
Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s chief science officer, provided a statement to Bloomberg. He conveyed his regret at Schulman’s departure but affirmed his support for Schulman’s choice to explore new avenues.
Kaplan stated that he “fully support[s] his decision to pursue new opportunities.”
The reasons behind Schulman’s relatively short stay at Anthropic remain undisclosed.
