OpenAI Expands AI-Powered Web Search in ChatGPT

ChatGPT Search Now Available to All Users
ChatGPT Search, the AI-driven web search functionality developed by OpenAI, is now accessible to all ChatGPT users. This rollout includes several enhancements to the user experience.
Automatic and Manual Search Activation
ChatGPT will intelligently decide when to utilize ChatGPT Search for user inquiries. Alternatively, users can initiate a web search directly through a newly added “Search the web” icon within the ChatGPT interface.
Summarized Results and Rich Media
ChatGPT Search presents concise summaries derived from various online sources. It also incorporates engaging content, such as embedded images and YouTube videos, directly into the results.
Evolution from SearchGPT
The launch of ChatGPT Search follows the October release of OpenAI’s SearchGPT prototype, initially unveiled earlier this summer. This new feature is powered by a specialized iteration of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model.
Real-Time Information Access
ChatGPT Search delivers current information from the web, including live sports scores, breaking news, current stock prices, and more. Relevant source links are provided, allowing users to delve deeper and ask clarifying questions.
Expanded Accessibility
Previously limited to premium subscribers, ChatGPT Search is now available to all ChatGPT users, regardless of their subscription status.
Performance Improvements and Mobile Enhancements
OpenAI has optimized ChatGPT Search for speed. It can now be configured as the default search engine for any web browser. The mobile experience has also been improved.
Mobile users will benefit from more organized business information, including addresses integrated with Apple Maps (within the iOS ChatGPT app) and readily available phone numbers.
Advanced Voice Mode Integration
ChatGPT Search is now compatible with Advanced Voice Mode, OpenAI’s real-time conversational feature. Users will soon be able to access up-to-date web information while utilizing Advanced Voice Mode on both desktop and mobile platforms.
Initial Feedback and Ongoing Refinement
Early testing of ChatGPT Search, as reported by Max Zeff, yielded mixed results. OpenAI is actively working to refine the feature, recognizing its potential for future growth.
Concerns from Publishers
Some publishers have expressed concerns regarding AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews. These concerns center around potential reductions in traffic to their websites.
Studies suggest that AI Overviews alone could potentially decrease publisher traffic by as much as 25% due to a diminished emphasis on links to external web pages.
Addressing Publisher Feedback
OpenAI has stated that it is incorporating feedback from its publishing partners. This feedback focuses on improving how ChatGPT Search determines article relevance, manages summary length, and selects quotations.
The goal is to ensure a fair and beneficial relationship between the search tool and content creators.
