1x Acquires Kind Humanoid - OpenAI Backing Fuels Robotics Growth

1X Acquires Kind Humanoid Robotics Startup
1X has completed the acquisition of Kind Humanoid, as reported by TechCrunch on Monday. This acquisition signifies a noteworthy consolidation within the humanoid robotics sector, occurring just before a potentially pivotal period anticipated in 2025.
Kind Humanoid's Early Development
TechCrunch engaged with Kind Humanoid in October. At that time, the startup, comprised of three individuals, announced a collaboration with renowned designer Yves Béhar for the development of their initial commercial robot.
The company’s origins mirrored the typical narrative of a resourceful startup emerging from a Silicon Valley environment. CEO Christoph Kohstall, a former robotics researcher at Google, provided a virtual tour of their East Bay facilities via Zoom.
Innovative Approach and Resourcefulness
During the tour, Kohstall highlighted the company’s unconventional approach to infrastructure. Instead of utilizing a standard ceiling-mounted gantry system, Kind Humanoid opted for a more economical solution – an $80 coat rack.
Kind Humanoid successfully attracted both Béhar, known for designs like the Jawbone fitness tracker and One Laptop Per Child, and the attention of other robotics companies.
1X's Growth and Funding
1X has garnered attention for its innovative use of generative AI in robotics and its substantial funding achievements. The company secured $100 million in funding in January of the previous year.
Investors in 1X include prominent firms such as Tiger Global and OpenAI. The continued growth of platforms like ChatGPT underscores the increasing interest in AI technologies.
Synergy of AI and Robotics
Kind Humanoid’s research has centered on the potential integration of large language models into robotics. This focus aligns with the broader industry trend of developing general intelligence for versatile humanoid robots.
1X stated that Kind Humanoid’s operations will contribute to the expansion of their Bay Area presence. The specific terms of the acquisition remain confidential.
