Mattel and OpenAI Forge Partnership for AI-Powered Toys

Mattel, the company renowned for creating Barbie, has joined forces with OpenAI to integrate generative AI into its toy development and intellectual property utilization.

A Novel Collaboration for OpenAI

This alliance represents uncharted territory for OpenAI. While the company has previously established licensing agreements with news organizations and larger enterprises, this marks its first venture into a partnership with a toy manufacturer.

The move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy of widespread industry integration. It potentially provides a strategic entry point into Mattel’s expanding entertainment division.

Mattel's Expanding Entertainment Portfolio

Mattel experienced significant success in 2023 with the release of the highly popular “Barbie” movie, captivating adult audiences.

Currently, the company is actively developing films based on other iconic toy brands, including Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Barney, UNO, and Masters of the Universe.

Mattel also boasts a diverse range of animated and live-action content for television. Furthermore, the company is making inroads into the digital gaming sector, anticipating the launch of its first independently published game in 2026, as indicated in its first-quarter earnings report.

Future Product Development

TechCrunch has contacted Mattel to ascertain the potential role of OpenAI’s technology in the upcoming game launch.

Specific details regarding the partnership remain limited. However, the companies anticipate unveiling their initial “AI-powered product” later this year.

The primary objective is to enhance “fan engagement” while prioritizing safety, responsibility, and thoughtful implementation.

Safety and Control

Mattel emphasized in a statement that safety, privacy, and security will be paramount in all products and experiences resulting from this collaboration.

Josh Silverman, Mattel’s chief franchise officer, revealed to Bloomberg that the product range will encompass both physical items and interactive experiences.

He clarified that Mattel is not granting OpenAI a license to its intellectual property, maintaining complete control over the creative process and product development.

Empowering Mattel Employees

As part of this agreement, Mattel employees will gain access to OpenAI tools, such as ChatGPT Enterprise, to facilitate enhanced product development and stimulate creative brainstorming.

“AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways,” stated Josh Silverman. “Our work with OpenAI will enable us to leverage new technologies to solidify our leadership in innovation and reimagine new forms of play.”

The Next Generation of Play

Whether this collaboration results in an AI-driven Barbie or simply accelerates scriptwriting processes, Mattel’s established brands are poised for a significant technological advancement.
