OpenAI Adopts Anthropic's Standard for AI Data Connections

OpenAI Adopts Anthropic's Model Context Protocol
OpenAI is now integrating support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard originally developed by competitor Anthropic. This move facilitates connections between AI assistants and the systems containing crucial data.
CEO Altman Announces Support
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced the adoption via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. The integration will span across OpenAI’s product suite, notably including the desktop application for ChatGPT.
Altman expressed enthusiasm, stating, “People love MCP and we are excited to add support across our products.” He further indicated that the functionality is currently available within the Agents SDK.
How MCP Enhances AI Responses
MCP is an open-source standard designed to improve the quality and relevance of AI responses to specific inquiries. It allows AI models to access and utilize information from various sources.
The protocol enables AI to draw data from business applications, software solutions, content repositories, and even application development environments. This capability is vital for completing complex tasks.
Building Connections with MCP
Developers can utilize “MCP servers” to expose data and create “MCP clients” – applications and workflows – that connect to these servers as needed. This establishes a two-way communication channel between data sources and AI applications.
Since Anthropic initially open-sourced MCP, several companies have begun implementing support for the protocol. These include Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph.
Industry Reaction and Future Plans
Mike Krieger, Anthropic’s chief product officer, welcomed OpenAI’s decision, noting the growing momentum of MCP as a thriving open standard. He emphasized the value of LLMs when connected to existing data and software.
According to Krieger, “LLMs are most useful when connecting to the data you already have and software you already use.”
OpenAI has indicated that further details regarding its MCP implementation will be shared in the coming months. The company aims to expand the protocol’s capabilities and integration across its offerings.
Key Benefits of MCP
- Improved AI response relevance
- Enhanced data access for AI models
- Streamlined integration with existing systems
- Facilitates two-way communication between AI and data sources
- Open-source standard promoting interoperability
