OnlyFans Reverses Course on Ban of Explicit Content

OnlyFans has retracted its initial decision to prohibit sexually explicit material following substantial public opposition to the proposed alteration in policy.

While OnlyFans wasn't originally conceived as a platform specifically for adult content, it has become prominently associated with this type of material.

Community Response and Company Statement

“We extend our gratitude to everyone who voiced their opinions. Agreements have been reached that will enable us to continue supporting our varied creator base, and the October 1 policy change has been suspended,” the company communicated via Twitter on Wednesday.

OnlyFans champions inclusivity and remains dedicated to providing a space for creators of all kinds.”

Banking Partner Assurances

A OnlyFans representative informed TechCrunch via email that “the changes scheduled for October 1, 2021, are no longer necessary due to assurances from banking partners that OnlyFans can accommodate creators across all genres.”

Previously, OnlyFans cited the need to adhere to the demands of its “banking partners and payout providers” as the reason for considering the ban on explicit content.

It appears the company successfully addressed the concerns of these financial institutions after publicly disclosing the situation.

Policy Suspension, Not Cancellation

It is important to note that OnlyFans’ official statement indicates the decision has been “suspended,” suggesting the policy change hasn't been entirely revoked.

A subsequent tweet from OnlyFans announced that “an official communication will be sent to creators shortly.”

Impact on Creators

The initial decision to ban explicit content caused considerable distress among sex workers who depend on the platform for income.

Some creators had already begun deleting their OnlyFans accounts and migrating to alternative platforms in anticipation of the policy change.

Now, with this reversal, creators must evaluate whether to return to OnlyFans or continue with rival services.

Platform Overview

Founded in 2016, OnlyFans reports having over 130 million registered users and more than 2 million creators.

The platform has also attracted notable celebrities, including Bella Thorne, Cardi B, and Bhad Bhabie.
