On Air: Transforming Your Android Device into a Wireless Storage Solution

On Air is a complimentary Android application designed to convert your Android phone’s internal storage into a Wi-Fi enabled drive. This facilitates effortless file transfer and synchronization, among other functionalities.

Simple Setup and Wireless Access

The application provides a straightforward setup process, effectively transforming your Android phone into a wireless storage resource. Users can then access their files wirelessly with ease.

The user interface is intentionally minimalist and relies heavily on icons. This simplicity can lead users to immediately activate the primary function without exploring the available configuration settings.

Configuration Options and Security

Upon initial launch, it’s recommended to avoid immediately pressing the prominent power button. Instead, tap the icon located in the upper right corner of the screen. This toggle allows selection between ADP, WebDAV, and FTP protocols. FTP was utilized for testing purposes.

Access the preferences window by pressing the menu button. Within this window, the button’s color can be customized – it was changed from red to green in our case – and a 4-digit PIN password can be secured.

Given usage on a private Wi-Fi network, the PIN lock was enabled to create a convenient FTP shortcut. However, for enhanced security when using the application outside of a trusted network, it’s advisable to leave the PIN generation enabled, ensuring a new PIN is created with each activation.

Minor Usability Concern

A single drawback observed during testing on a Nexus S device was the lack of a clear “off” function for the server via the main power button. It’s possible this is specific to the test device.

Currently, the server isn't deactivated by the button; instead, the session must be terminated by pressing the phone’s Back button or through a task manager. Despite this, the application performs as advertised, allowing for convenient file access while the phone is charging.
