Nvidia AI Chip for China: Reportedly New Design in the Works

Nvidia's Strategy for the Chinese AI Market

Despite ongoing U.S. export controls, Nvidia is actively pursuing avenues to continue selling AI chips within China.

New Chip Launch Planned

Reports indicate that the semiconductor leader intends to introduce a dedicated AI chip tailored for the Chinese market as soon as September, as initially detailed by the Financial Times.

This new offering will be built upon Nvidia’s Blackwell RTX Pro 6000 processor. It will incorporate modifications designed to comply with current restrictions on AI chip exports.

Key Feature Limitations

The chips being developed for China will not feature high-bandwidth memory. Additionally, they will exclude NVLink, Nvidia’s proprietary high-speed, low-latency communication interface.

These components are integral to the functionality of Nvidia’s more sophisticated AI chips.

Revenue Forecast Adjustments

Just last month, Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, announced the company would cease including Chinese market projections in its overall revenue and profit forecasts.

However, this decision may prove temporary given the new product launch.

Nvidia's Official Response

Nvidia has not issued a public statement regarding these reports.

A company spokesperson did, however, emphasize the following: “Current export regulations have effectively removed us from the Chinese datacenter market.

The Importance of the Chinese Developer Community

This market is now primarily served by competitors like Huawei.

China possesses a substantial and growing community of developers. These developers are actively creating open-source foundation models and applications with global reach.

While national security remains a critical concern, it is believed that these applications should ideally operate using the U.S. AI stack.”

The spokesperson further stated that ensuring optimal performance for these applications is paramount.
