During Nvidia’s latest earnings report, Huang confirmed the release of the Blackwell B300 series, internally known as Blackwell Ultra, is planned for the latter half of the current year.
Blackwell Ultra and Rubin
Beyond increased computational capabilities, Blackwell Ultra cards will feature expanded memory capacity (288GB). This is a particularly appealing attribute for users aiming to operate and train large, memory-intensive AI models.
Nvidia’s next-generation GPU series, Rubin, is expected to be discussed at GTC in conjunction with Blackwell Ultra. Scheduled for release in 2026, Rubin is projected to deliver a substantial increase in computing performance, as described by Huang.
Huang also mentioned during the earnings call that he would share insights into products beyond Rubin at GTC. This could encompass Rubin Ultra GPUs or potentially the GPU architecture succeeding the Rubin family. These chips are named in honor of Vera Rubin, the astronomer renowned for her discovery of dark matter.
Expanding Horizons
In addition to GPUs, Nvidia may detail its strategies regarding recent progress in quantum computing. A dedicated “quantum day” is planned within GTC, featuring executives from leading companies in the field to “[map] the path toward practical quantum applications.”
Currently, Nvidia faces certain challenges. Reports indicate that initial Blackwell cards experienced significant overheating problems, leading to order reductions from customers.
Challenges and Opportunities
U.S. export restrictions and concerns about potential tariffs have negatively impacted Nvidia’s stock value in recent months. Simultaneously, the success of the Chinese AI lab DeepSeek, which has developed competitive AI models, has raised investor concerns regarding the demand for high-performance GPUs like Blackwell.
Huang maintains that DeepSeek’s emergence will ultimately benefit Nvidia by accelerating the wider adoption of AI technologies. He also highlighted the growth of computationally demanding “reasoning” models, such as OpenAI’s o1, as Nvidia’s next major objective.
Despite these challenges, Nvidia’s financial performance remains strong. The company reported record revenue of $39.3 billion in February and forecasts $43 billion for the following quarter. While competitors like AMD are gaining ground, Nvidia still controls approximately 82% of the GPU market.
However, Huang reportedly desires to see more tangible AI applications extending beyond the technology sector.
