Notion Launches AI-Powered Email Client: Notion Mail

On Tuesday, Notion unveiled Notion Mail, an innovative email client powered by artificial intelligence. This new application is designed for use with Gmail and seamlessly integrates with Notion’s existing suite of workflow management tools.

Key Features and Functionality

Notion Mail establishes a connection to users’ Gmail accounts. It then leverages AI to streamline email management, assisting with tasks such as organizing messages, composing replies, arranging appointments, and conducting comprehensive searches.

Access to Notion Mail is available to all Notion users. The AI-driven features are provided without cost, subject to monthly usage limitations, or are accessible through an unlimited subscription plan.

Competitive Landscape

The introduction of Notion Mail occurs within a rapidly expanding market of companies aiming to enhance email experiences through AI. Superhuman, a prominent competitor, has secured $108 million in venture capital for its email client, which operates independently of traditional email providers like Gmail or Microsoft Outlook.

Fyxer, another player in this space, recently raised $10 million and offers connectivity with both Gmail and Outlook.

It is important to recognize that many of the functionalities offered by Notion Mail are also present in existing email services, such as Gmail, which utilizes AI for email sorting, response suggestions, and meeting scheduling.

A Focus on Customization

Jason Ginsberg, the lead for Notion Mail, explained to TechCrunch that the primary goal wasn’t simply to add AI to a conventional inbox. Instead, the intention was to empower users to create a personalized inbox tailored to their specific needs and preferences.

“Our approach to building Notion Mail was to focus on the fundamental components of how email functions,” Ginsberg stated. “The system is highly modular, allowing users to configure Notion Mail in ways we haven’t even anticipated, creating a truly customized experience.”

Built on Skiff Technology

The underlying infrastructure for Notion Mail originates from Skiff, an end-to-end encrypted collaboration platform acquired by Notion in 2024 for an undisclosed amount. Ginsberg was a co-founder of Skiff, which also featured an email product.

Innovative Inbox Views

A standout feature of Notion Mail is its ability to categorize inboxes into distinct “views” or folders. Utilizing Notion AI, the system automatically labels emails based on their subject matter and organizes them into topic-specific inboxes.

Ginsberg suggests this capability will be particularly useful for managing specific tasks, such as tracking job applications. He personally uses it to efficiently monitor feedback from beta testers of Notion Mail.

Seamless Integration with Notion Ecosystem

Notion Mail integrates seamlessly with other Notion products, including Notion Calendar and the platform’s internal knowledge base. This integration enables time-saving efficiencies.

For example, if a meeting is proposed within an email exchange, Notion’s AI will check the user’s calendar, identify available time slots, and prompt them to schedule the meeting.

Beyond Email Composition

Ginsberg noted that much of the current innovation in AI-powered email focuses on assisting with email writing. He believes Notion Mail distinguishes itself through its emphasis on building a customized inbox experience.

“Our primary focus has been on how AI can help you organize your email,” Ginsberg explained. “This shifts the experience from a constant struggle through an overwhelming, standardized inbox to a new approach that eliminates manual sorting.”

Future Development Plans

Looking ahead, Notion intends to expand product integrations and offer additional access methods for Notion Mail, such as a dedicated iOS application. The team also plans to introduce the ability to display multiple inboxes within a single view.
