Threads DMs: User Reactions and Concerns

Instagram Threads Faces Backlash Over New Direct Messaging Feature
This week saw the introduction of direct messages (DMs) to Instagram Threads, a feature the company highlighted as its most highly requested to date.
However, the rollout has been met with considerable user resistance.
Concerns Regarding Harassment
A significant portion of the negative feedback, particularly from female users, centers around concerns about potential harassment.
Many are advocating for an option to completely disable DMs.
“I don’t want to receive DMs. Is there a way to disable this feature? I’m speaking for many women,” one user expressed on the platform.
Another user stated, “This simply provides more avenues for online harassment of women.”
A third user commented, “Congratulations on implementing a feature desired solely by stalkers.”
User Feedback and Lack of Control
Numerous users responded to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, regarding the DM announcement.
Many voiced their disapproval, stating they did not request this functionality.
One user referenced a poll demonstrating overwhelming preference against the inclusion of DMs.
Currently, there is no option to turn off the DM feature.
Beyond Harassment: Spam and Bots
Alongside harassment worries, users are also expressing concerns about potential inbox clutter from bots, spam, and unwanted solicitations.
Current DM System Design
The current system requires users to follow one another before direct messaging is possible.
Unfollowing a user revokes their DM access.
Blocking a user prevents them from messaging and also blocks them on Instagram.
The Nature of Online Complaints
It’s worth noting that those voicing dissatisfaction are more likely to publicly share their opinions.
This mirrors a common pattern where negative experiences receive more online attention than positive ones, as seen on platforms like Google Maps and Yelp.
Disruption to Established Culture
Adding features to a growing social media platform after its culture has been established can be disruptive.
Introducing a private messaging system alters the way some users intend to utilize Threads.
The absence of user control, such as an opt-out option, contributes to feelings of helplessness.
Misunderstanding User Intent
Meta’s decision to link DMs to follower status may have been intended to provide users with control over who could contact them privately.
However, the company appears to have overlooked the fact that users on a public network like Threads may follow individuals for their content without desiring direct interaction.
This creates a situation where users may be connected to strangers they prefer to keep at a distance.
