How Smart Outlets Function
Most smart outlets – including models from brands like Belkin WeMo and ConnectSense – operate on a similar principle. They are plugged into a conventional outlet, connected to your home’s Wi-Fi network, and then an appliance is plugged into the smart outlet itself.
Control is then managed through a dedicated smartphone application. A crucial factor is that the connected electronic device must remain powered on at all times for the smart outlet to effectively manage its power state.

Mechanical vs. Electronic Switches: The Key Difference
All appliances utilize either a mechanical or an electronic switch to control power. Understanding this distinction is vital when considering smart outlet integration.
A mechanical switch features distinct, physically toggled positions for on and off. Examples include rocker switches and toggle switches – the state is changed by manually moving the switch from one position to another.
