Nokia Introduces Voice-Guided Walking Navigation for Mobile Devices

Nokia has recently made available a browser-based iteration of Nokia Maps. This new version delivers voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions specifically for pedestrians, accessible on a wide range of mobile platforms.

Notably, this functionality remains absent in many competing map applications. Users can now experience this feature on devices including the iPhone, iPad, and Android phones running version 2.3 or later. Essentially, any device equipped with a web browser can utilize this service.

Accessing Nokia Maps

To begin, navigate your mobile browser to m.maps.nokia.com. The application will then request permission to access your device’s current location.

Granting location access is essential to enable the voice-guided walking directions. Without this permission, the voice navigation feature will not function.

Following location authorization, simply input your desired destination. The system will then calculate a walking route, provided it is less than 50 kilometers in length.

Upon route calculation, a purple play button will become visible on the screen's left side. Initiating the navigation requires acceptance of the terms and conditions, as well as downloading the necessary voice pack.

Exploring with Voice Guidance

Once the voice pack is downloaded, users can confidently explore new urban environments. The system provides audible directions, allowing for easy navigation between points of interest while simultaneously enjoying the surroundings.

Currently, voice navigation is limited to pedestrian routes. Nokia has indicated that this initial release is focused on urban applications, with plans to expand functionality in subsequent updates.

Future enhancements are anticipated to broaden the scope of voice-guided navigation.
