Let's acknowledge the growing prominence of indoor farming.

Recent months have seen significant activity in the sector, with AppHarvest, a company specializing in greenhouse tomato cultivation, becoming publicly traded via a special acquisition company, and Plenty, a major player in vertical farming, securing $140 million in funding. Now, Gotham Greens, focused on building a network of greenhouses, has announced the completion of an $87 million funding round.

These emerging agricultural businesses demonstrate considerable success in attracting substantial investment.

This latest funding brings Gotham Greens’ total capital raised since its inception to an impressive $130 million. The investment round included participation from Manna Tree and The Silverman Group.

While AppHarvest is concentrating on tomatoes in its efforts to compete with established agricultural leaders, Gotham Greens is prioritizing its hydroponically cultivated leafy greens as a pathway to growth.

The company plans to utilize this new funding to further develop greenhouses throughout the United States and introduce a wider variety of vegetables to consumers.

“Considering the increasing difficulties within traditional food distribution systems, alongside evolving consumer demands, Gotham Greens is dedicated to broadening its regional production and distribution network during a particularly important time for the nation,” stated Viraj Puri, co-founder and CEO of Gotham Greens.

Currently, the company’s greens are available in over 40 states, distributed from greenhouses located in Chicago, Providence, Rhode Island, Baltimore and Denver. These facilities supply products to 2,000 retail locations, including Whole Foods Markets, Albertsons stores, Meijer, Target, King Soopers, Harris Teeter, ShopRite and Sprouts.

Gotham Greens is also diversifying its product offerings. Beyond its core greens, the company now sells packaged salads, cooking sauces, and prepared salad bowls.
