Spotify Lossless Audio: New Code Hints at Imminent Launch

Spotify's Lossless Audio Tier: Signs of Continued Development

Over four years have passed since Spotify initially revealed its intentions to introduce a lossless audio tier, a feature that remains unavailable to users.

Despite repeated leaks and indications from company executives, expectations for an imminent launch have been tempered. However, recent discoveries within the music application’s code suggest ongoing development efforts.

Code References to "Lossless" Discovered

Technologist and reverse engineer Chris Messina identified several references to “lossless” within the latest build of the Spotify desktop application.

These code snippets primarily relate to informational help cards designed to educate users about the benefits and functionality of the lossless tier.

One such card states, “Lossless music, now in premium,” while another specifies the audio quality as “the best sound quality on Spotify for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.”

The code also includes warnings regarding song availability in lossless format and potential playback issues due to poor network connectivity.

Furthermore, it notes that optimal enjoyment of lossless music is achieved through devices compatible with Spotify Connect or wired connections.

Mobile App Updates Also Indicate Progress

Reddit user u/bendotlc observed similar changes in the latest mobile app version, with code now mentioning lossless audio.

The code proclaims, “Say hello to the best sound quality on Spotify. Listen to high-fidelity music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.”

This Redditor suggests the feature is already integrated into the app, but currently deactivated. Data from Appsensa corroborates these findings.

Past Delays and Future Prospects

It’s important to note that the presence of code references doesn't guarantee a swift release. Previous instances of leaks and code discoveries have not resulted in an immediate launch.

Spotify executives, including CEO Daniel Ek, have alluded to investments in premium offerings for dedicated “super fans” during investor calls, but have refrained from providing specific timelines.

Continued Investment in Premium Tiers

Spotify Chief Business Officer Alex Norstrom recently affirmed the company’s ongoing investment in more premium tiers.

He stated that creating higher tiers around new offerings is a priority, as it unlocks opportunities to enhance user experience.

Licensing Agreements and Potential Breakthroughs

Spotify initially announced plans for Spotify HiFi in 2021, promising “CD-quality, lossless audio.” Prior to this announcement, the company had conducted tests of a lossless option.

Delays were subsequently attributed to licensing challenges. However, recent agreements with major labels like Warner Music and Universal Music Group may resolve these issues.

Bloomberg reported earlier this year about a potential “Music Pro” tier launching later in 2025, featuring high-quality streaming, remixing capabilities, and other enhancements.

Spotify has not yet commented on this report.

Following initial publication, Messina and others discovered methods to enable the changes within the app, making the lossless feature visible.

This article has been updated to include additional data discovered in Spotify’s mobile application.
